Taxes on Fed-exed items??

Hello everybody...I am a Fall '04 applicant to SGU. I haven't heard anything yet, but had a question about bringing different items onto the island. I know that taxes are imposed on certain items at customs such as electronics, tobacco, etc., but what if some of those items were shipped to you...will they go through the mail and still impose taxes on them?? What if my brother bought me a digital camera and Fed-Exed it to me-would that be taxed upon arrival??

Thanks a bunch

yes you will be taxed. Nearly everything that enters this island is taxed, electronics are one of the most heavily taxed items.

yes

for sure...
fedex, UPS, DHL ..whatever you use.. will be taxed. Smaller packages may be sent directly to campus and larger packages may be picked up downtown at the carenage where it will be opened, inspected and taxed...good luck

Shipping means taxes

Hello,

I use FedEx at least once a month to receive packages from home. I know for a fact that everything goes through customs no matter what the method of shipping. Where there is a bit of an advantage, is if shipping FedEx, sometimes they don't open up my packages and just go by the declaration on the box, however if it is an electronic item, such as a camera, they WILL open it and WILL NOT release it to you unless you send along the ORIGINAL INVOICE for that product. So there you go...anymore questions I'd be glad to answer.

hide it

Just hide your electronics good and be nice to the customs people. I brought in a digital camera and PS2 with no problems. I just put the camera in my pocket and wrapped up the PS2 in a bunch of sheets.

be very careful with this. If you are caught doing this, you will pay for it; distress items, bring reciepts etc. Above all be polite and accomodating.

Birthday Wrappings

When fedexing items, have whomever wrap it in birthday wrap. Tell them it's your birthday and you have no idea what's in there. They didn't open it when I did that.

Thanks for the info

Thank you guys so much for the responses...Matt M, I'll be sure to "celebrate" my birthday with every gift. Also, is tobacco available down there (preferably smokeless tobacco-skoal) for purchase...if so, what price.
