Post "What are My Chances?" Here Only
I know many come here when they start to think about attending a Caribbean Medical School or are nervously waiting to hear from the admission committee.
Please post here so other prospectives have a place to start and those accepted, current students and graduates that would like to chime in, can give you some advice. Remember, generally no one here is on the adcom, so take any advice given here with a healthy grain of salt. here is some info to start you out... About SGU - St. George’s University |

try top medical school....evidently there was a spam back in the day that caused that phrase to be auto censored. not to be flip, but aim to get the best score you can possibly get...mid 20s is the average, the closer you are to the avg, the better off you will be...but aim for the 30-even if you don't get it, you won't be that far off. |

Need some serious advice!
Hi all,
I am fairly new on the site, this is my first post but I have been reading posts for a few months now. I am posting because I find myself in quite a dilema. A little background (or a lot). Until Aug. of '07 I was working as a network administrator for a company. I graduated with a bachelors in computer science in '04 from a small private college (night school). I received a 3.76 GPA. I was working as a network administrator even prior to my degree, since about '03. I attended a Junior College from '98 - '00 and went through a divorce my second and third semesters there, needles to say, my GPA was horrible (2.5). Now of course that is coming back to haunt me. Growing up, all the way through highschool and even in to the beginning of college I always wanted to be doctor, I even got my CNA license and have worked in both a hospital and nursing home setting. But for what ever reason I gave this up after struggling through my divorce (which involved a child). So I found coumputers and loved it and thought that that is what I would do for my career. Well last spring I started talking to my wife ( I am married again, 6 years, 3 kids) about my earlier aspirations of being a doctor, and to my dismay she encouraged me to follow my dreams. I applied to a Post-Bacc program and was accepted, picked up my family and moved across the country to attend school in Georgia, from Idaho. (Chose Georgia because my inlaws live close by) I started the Post-Bacc program in Aug '07 and am now on semester break. The problem I am facing is that until now I was unaware of how GPA's (and BPCM GPA) were calculated, as far as including all my grades all the way back. So I finally found an AMCAS GPA calculator and found out that if I get A's in the rest of my classes I will be facing a cGPA of 3.11 and a sGPA of 2.72, I have not taken the mcat yet. So I obviously know now that only foreign med schools would even consider me, and that I am even low for that. So after finding this out tonight I am debating whether I shoudl continue in my program or just bail now. I hate to even say that, but as I mentioned earlier I have a family to think about. I would just hate to finish out the next 8 months, and an extra $20K and then have no chance to get in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, seems like there are a lot of wise sensible people on hear and it would be great to know what you guys thought, good or bad. Sorry for the long post, but I thought the back ground info was important. |

I am unsticky-ing this thread. I personally dont feel that there should be one dedicated "what are my chances " thread. to begin with, every situation is different. 2nd of all, if they annoy you, dont answer them. 3rd, it actually encourages people to take the lazy way out and just tack on a "so what are my chances post" when they might otherwise do a little legwork and post when they have more focued questions. finally, a lost list of stickied threads just is cluttered and doesnt allow for the natural dynamic of the threads to rise or sink by user interest and relevance.

It is all up to you as I do not know you personally. You have to decide how badly you want to be a doctor. If you make all As and make mid to high 20s on the MCAT, you have a shot at Ross and SGU. You have a unique life experience that many schools will take into account. I will venture to say that if you put your best effort in getting into med school, you WILL make it, but it will be very difficult for you in the years to come and will take a toll on your personal life. Is that worth it to you? Only you can answer that but you do have a chance. You will never know if you would have made it unless you try. Gluck with your decisions. Also, keep in mind of DO schools. I think you have a good shot at them if you repeat the classes you did bad in. Remember, when you apply through AACOMAS for DO schools, the GPA that is reported is with grades replaced, whereas AMCAS is averaged. That might not make a difference for some, but for you it can be a HUGE advantage. Recalculate your GPAs with some grades replaced and see if somehow you can get your GPA up to about a 3.4-3.5 and then apply to DO schools. Last edited by Phospholipid; 01-09-2008 at 09:49 PM. |

obviously i don't agree (since i have been BEGGING for one), but how is this thread less relevant than the St vincent sticky? Students aren't EVEN in vinnies anymore. I would think that if there is a need to clear out stickies, that one should have gone as well.

thanks for the reply Phos. Just to make it a little clearer, I had already made the decision to go to med school and all the undertaking that would be involved. My only concern at the moment is whether or not I would possibly be considered for acceptance. I had somewhat the same dilema when considering whether or not to leave to go to the post-bacc program, and the point you make about not knowing until I tried was my deciding factor. I just don't know now if I am facing an insurmountable task.
