Red face Confused!

Hey everyone, this is my first time posting, and I have a couple of questions. First of all, I would like to have an idea of what my chances of getting into SGU are. My cumulative undergraduate GPA is a 3.992 ( The lowest grade that I have received was one B last semester). My MCAT is a 26Q. I have done extensive volunteer work, I am the vice president of the American Medical Students Association at Barry University, and I'm also the Vice President of the Habitat For Humanity chapter. I have shadowed two doctors, and I have great letters of recommendation. I was recently offered an Interview at SGU, so now I'm wondering what my chances are.

My next inquiry is about whether I should pursue attending a caribbean medical school or if I should wait until next year to apply to US medical schools again. I think my biggest problem this year has been that I applied pretty late. I took my MCAT in August and I began applying in September. I applied to 13 US medical schools (MD) and I received secondaries from all of them. So far I have been rejected from four schools, reason being that I applied too late..(or maybe they were just trying to be nice). I did not apply to any DO schools, because I've always seen myself as an MD and I did not want to go that route.

Can someone please help me out with some advice!?

THANKS

well the main problem is not that you applied late but that you scored a 26 on the MCAT. If you feel strongly that you will score a 28 or higher if you retook the exam then I'd take it again and reapply next year as early as you can get things organized. It all really depends on where you live though. A 4.0/28 will likely get you into a state school in Mississippi, Georgia, etc but if you're in NY/CA/TX (or CAN) like most of us here then you'll probably need a 30 or higher.

A 26 is likely going to keep you out of all allopathic schools unless you're an under-represented minority.

What are my chances?

Hi all,

Any comments is greatly appreciated. Just want to know what my chances are of getting into SGU. I've been accepted to Ross and AUA but apparently it seems like Ross's clinicals aren't so great. But it definitely is cheaper to go to Ross than to SGU (I think, correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm a double major (neuroscience/psychology) from UC Berkeley. Undergraduate GPA 3.3 overall. MCATs 22 (retaking it again in the summer). Got lots of volunteer/extracurricular experience. Would SGU look at volunteer activities?

Shorty - retake the MCAT. It is a lot harder to bring up a GPA than bring up an MCAT score. With 3.99 and 30 MCAT, as well as applying early, you can get into a US school.

suesue, you couldn't pay me to go to Ross. That is just my opinion but with the clinical situation at Ross, you could potentially not graduate on time or perform poorly on a step exam because you couldn't get all your cores done in third year (a low step score could influence where you get a residency). Not to mention, potentially having to move around for clinicals ($$) and having to pay full tuition if you have to repeat a class. Also if you don't graduate on time because of clinical issues, then you could lose an entire year of MD income. All of these issues could lead to more money and hassle by attending Ross vs SGU. Your GPA is fine - bring up your MCAT to a 27-28 and you have a good shot at SGU.

Thanks so much for the advice, but with a 26 on the mcat and a 3.92 GPA, I should have a good shot at SGU right? The problem is that I don't want to put off a year to retake the MCAT, although I know that I would most likely do better, seeing as the reason why I scored so low was that my mouse froze for 15 minutes during the verbal reasoning portion, causing me to get a 10B, 9P, 7V ) sucks doesn't it?? So.. my interview for St. George's is on Wednesday, although I do not have a good shot at US allopathic schools, what about St. Georges?

I tell you what; if the fact that your mouse "froze" is genuinely the reason why you scored so poorly on your verbal then, personally speaking, there's no way, no-how I'd let that keep me out of a US school.

Moving to GND for 2 years, becoming an FMG and bringing upon yourself all the hardship that comes with it simply because your mouse froze is absolute crazy-talk.

Very true on the US schools. Particularly with the admin hassles lately.

For SGU, I'm no admissions counselor, but you sound good as gold.

I would think you would have spoken to a proctor about your mouse. Anyway, I agree with Angry- take a year and re-try for the US. It is your BEST option.
