Apply and see. Worst case they may offer you the FOM (Foundation of Medicine) route. If you achieve a minimum gpa in FOM you are guaranteed a seat in SOM. All the best with your application. |

cavatelli,
do you know anything about FOM. WHen they sent me the email for the interview invite they said it would also be conducted for the FOM program. I had my interview last week. Do you think they might offer FOM since they mentioned it, my gpa and MCAT are lower than average so I was hoping that since 50% get interviews and I got one, that maybe they will offer FOM. What'dyou think? |

2.7 GPA overall
3.0 science GPA showing an upward trend with very rigorous classes. My major was biophysics(taken 5 math classes after calc, 7 physics classes, etc.). 34Q MCAT(11PS/12VR/11BS) Will I make it? Hopefully I can at least get FOM? Last edited by physics junkie; 03-09-2008 at 12:26 AM. |

No, I had a kid while in college so I don't want to waste time so to speak. I would rather get on with the show than spend a year or two banking on a long shot going deeper into debt. If I want it that bad I'll bust my *** and try to transfer/land a good residency. I'd rather take a "year off" as a transitional year after medical school.

physics junkie,
I envy your MCAT scores. But that is besides the point. I did poorly during my first 3 semester as an undergraduate, but then I picked up my GPA in these last 2 1/2 years (each semester was nothing below a 3.6 gpa). These classes that I did well in were classes for my major, so I at least that counts for something. But my advisor that I grew close with wrote me a recommendation letter making it clear how my grades drastically improved. He actually made a graph of my actually gpa each semester (there was a steep increase) and a graph of my "would" be gpa if my first 3 semester were like the two past years. I know, crazy. But he claims that people are visual. Basically, find someone, preferably a professor (not a TA) to write you a really good recommendation letter. Someone that you know and trust. I know that sometimes that is impossible but try to see if you have anyone like that in your academic career. I believe that his letter really helped a lot. |

This might be the wrong thread to post in because I know what my chances @ SGU are.
2.3 cGPA (with REALLY severe downward trend - 4.0 first sem to 1.0 last sem - straight As in pre-med courses first time I took them; then I retook them 'cus I was an idiot and I needed to maintain my legal visa in US - second time around, grades were flat out Ds) 2.5 sGPA (... maybe lower... :O) 35M MCAT (2007) research decent LORs Short of doing a whole year of classes and kicking butt all through, what can I say in my personal statement to convince SGU that I'm not going to melt down in the middle of medschool and set everything on fire? I've had a LOT (a LOT) of issues maintaining my visa in USA & issues with work authorization & just lots of crappy little problems that happen when you're in a foreign country... Anyone in a similar situation who might be able to offer some help/advice? |
