I had nearly the exact same stats: 34 MCAT and 3.12 out of UVa. I did a master's program in Anatomy and Neurobiology but my undergraduate GPA came back and bit me every time I applied. If you are set on a US school then a master's might help but there is no guarantee. Just make sure you nail all of the classes in the program and get some good recommendations. That being said, my application to SGU was approved very quickly and I will be attending in the fall. Good luck with whatever route you choose.
Also, if you are pursuing a career as a clinical doctor then it may be painful to continue doing research (as I found out the hard way).

I'm posting because I just found out, that I failed my first class ever and I'm wondering what my standings are (if there is any hope). I'm a 3d year student, but plan on drawing my degree out (with another major and minor) for 5th year.

my gpa is currently 3.25 (with 1 D)
mcat: have not taken it yet

PLEASE get back to me, I am grateful, thank you.
1. What course did you get a D in?

2. What course did you fail?

At Cornell...our pre-med advisors tell us that if you get a D+ or lower in one of the "core" pre-med courses or upper div science, you should retake it.

If the course you failed is not a science one...it's really up to you to retake it, but it couldn't hurt if you did.

Just work on doing well in your remaining years and rock the MCAT. Good luck!

It's going to be very very tough to get into any US MD or DO school with a 3.14 GPA, unless you belong to one of the minority groups, and even then, it's sketchy at best. I also would NOT recommend getting a Master's Degree just to try to improve your chances of getting into a US med school - they don't really take those grades that much into consideration. I would apply to SGU and your chances may be pretty decent since you have a good MCAT.

The most competitive DO schools have avg acceptance stats around 3.5-6 GPA and 27-8 MCAT. The middle/lower-tier osteopathic schools are, obviously, lower and usually around 3.1-4 GPA 24-6 MCAT. Keep in mind those GPAs are with any repeats replacing previous (assumingly) poorer grades. A 3.1 GPA and 34 MCAT makes a good candidate for some DO schools, especially if the applicant has good LOR's, extracurricular, etc.

The only thing is you usually need to have a LOR from a DO.

You can compare your stats for yourself. Your gpa is slightly lower than the average. You could make up for it with a great mcat score.

Do you plan to apply to US schools first? Most people would tell you that is the way to go.

i will definitely bring my gpa up over these next 3 semesters (summer, fall and spring) and i will KILL the mcat. I don't even think i'm worthy of schools in the USA, but for some reason, I've had my mind set on going to the caribbean. I will apply everywhere however. thank you so much for your input, it definitely gave me alittle peace.

1.2. I got a D in Anatomy which at my school, is a FAIL (..i think). either way, it's my first D of my life and I am definitely retaking it (and getting an A.) I will definitely be working harder, I spent all night cleaning my room and revamping my life. Thank you, you also gave me peace of mind.

I think I love this forum . Thank you all for your help

yea this is a great forum people help out quiet a bit compared to SDN, the only reason i dont want to do masters is because it would accumulate loans without guaranteeing anything.

There are master's programs (traditional, not special) that are fully funded if you do RA/TA. You just need to search for them, not too many of them there though.

Let me add that they are basic science masters, not MPH kind which i think would be more useful.
