Hahaha. Precisely why health care has become so unaffordable in the United States. The system is too fragmented, with different groups feeling they have different duties - when actually they're interconnected.

P.S. Just like doctors will never be jobless, neither will social workers

That is the kind of knowledge and experience that doctors become familiar with only after a period of working in the health sector. Thanks to this program, I have a head start there.

Unfortunately, many MD students are only concerned with becoming doctors and seeing patients and carrying out medical procedures and making money. They don't look at the big picture - how the patient got the disease in the first place, and how that could be avoided in future. Physicians have become channelized only to cure, and have left the business of prevention to the social workers.

If medicine is 'Cure', public health is 'Prevention' - and I don't need to remind you of the old adage, do I?

Disclaimer - The above is a generalization and doesn't apply to all MD students or physicians. You may be different - and if so, good for you!
Again, that's great if you want to get into public health or hospital administration. If you're just interested in practicing not so much.

It certainly won't hurt your app and might provide some interesting conversation, but I highly doubt you'll get selected for a residency spot (except maybe the CDC...do they have post-grad training??) simply because you've got an MPH if everything else is similar.

I'm also not saying it's a useless degree, only that as an MD seeking to practice medicine it's usefulness if limited.

You may be right AngryBaby. But you're looking at it from the perspective of how it will help me get residency or make good money. I'm looking at it from the perspective of how it will help me be a better, more well-rounded doctor. It may have minimal utility to me as an individual, but it has great utility for society - if physicians are also well versed in public health.

hello everyone,

this is my first post here and just like most people i have many questions:

After reading these posts it seems to me that AUC and SGU are equally as good. Are they better than Ross?

Is it easier to get in AUC compared to SGU?

I wil have a degree in Civil Engineering in May 2009. My gpa is low (2.7) and my science gpa is 3.1. I also repeated 4 classes. I am totally capable of doing better in school (i was a bad student for some time, but that has changed). By the time i finish my undergrad degree i expect my gpa to be between 3.0 and 3.1. My science gpa is very likely to increase too. I still need to take the MCAT, and usually i do pretty good in these kinds of tests. What score would i need to get to have a good chance at SGU and other caribbean med schools? Or should i just stop dreaming? I don't have much voluteering experience, no research (only school work)...

I would appreciate any comments or advice!

AUC is easier to get into than SGU and often doesnt require an interview. i got into both with a similar gpa. i got a 28 on the mcats so i advise you to aim for something in the high 20's and above. the lack of research and volunteer will probably hurt ur application. but i say rock the mcats and apply to both. best of luck!

oh yea i turned down the ross interview after i got my AUC acceptance. personally i dont feel i would be able to live in the island of dominica for 2 yrs. the conditions are far from the city life i am accustomed to. with that being said, if you are an outdoorsy/adventurous type might as well apply to ross as well

I grew up in a really big city. I really like outdoor activities but my fiancee would be coming with me. I think she would get extremely bored living in a place where there's not much to do while i'm going to med school.
I have one year to get volunteer experience. I don't think it would be a problem to get good LOR's.
Thank you!

You're only in Dominica for 16 months....but if you're used to city life...those 16 months could be rough.

I'm from a very small town...but I'm pretty high maintenance and have a lot of needs so I know Dominica wouldn't be good for me :-)

Just rock the MCAT and get great LORs and you should be just fine for SGU or AUC!

now I have to decide if I want to take the plunge and go to SGU or reapply to US schools...
