Hey guys. I'm new to the forum so bear with me. After getting wait listed and rejected last year and this year, I wanted to know whether I should reapply to US schools again or just stick with the Caribbean. I graduated in May 07 with a ** in Biochem and in my year off have been pursuing a MPH. I'm not sure I want to pursue the MPH anymore but know completing it could improve my chances if I reapply in the US.
Stats: GPA: 3.53 sGPA: 3.2 MCAT: 23P (P6, V8, B9) 26L (P9, V9, B8) 24N (P7, V9, B8 If I complete the MPH, will it improve my chances of getting in a US medical school or have my MCAT scores (especially the drop between the 2nd and 3rd attempt) ruined my chances of getting in. I have applied to to both Ross and SGU and have been granted an interview at SGU (waiting to hear from Ross). Thanks in advance for the help. I have also shadowed several physicians and have 80+ volunteer hours in a free clinic. Last edited by Dr. Turkleton; 04-16-2008 at 11:28 PM. |

It will be very tough to get into US schools with those mcat scores. It is often said here to apply in US for two application cycles before applying to the caribbean. Do you want to wait another year? i think that is a personal choice. Just remember, there should be no regrets about getting into US schools and no what ifs.

The MCAT is a little too low for US schools (unless you're African American or Hispanic). I wouldn't pursue US MD schools. You can try for US DO schools, or come down to SGU.
Since you've already started MPH for a year, I'd recommend you complete it. It always helps in your future career as a doctor, and they'll probably look at it when you come back to the US seeking residency. I also took the MPH hoping it would get me into US schools, but even though I did well in MPH, I didn't get into med school for certain reasons. So I'm probably going to SGU, but I also have a great MPH degree which will make me an MD/MPH, and put me in a better position than regular MDs. Many people take MPH after becoming MDs, in order to have an additional degree. I've seen many MDs in my MPH classes. |

I think that having a MPH in addition to a MD might put you in a better position later on in your carreer, but not so much for residency.
Me personally, I felt that I did not want to do a MPH degree because by the time I started 1st year med I would not remember a lot of my undergraduate basic science, like biochem, cell bio, physio etc, due to the 2 years doing the MPH. |
