Simply stated:

Is SGU more willing to accept students with lower numbers in January? as opposed to August?

I've read so many different opinions on this topic, but would love input from a current student or current applicants! Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm hoping to apply for January (3.3 gpa, 3.25 sgpa, MCAT in May, practice tests between 24-26).

Thanks again!

I am under the impression the Jan class is slightly less competitive to get in terms of stats. However, SGU overall is becoming more competitive to get in with time.

i think its more of an issue of less applicants in Jan and a more competitive pool for the aug class. Many people who are applying to the US will also apply for the Aug class as well and many of them will be, well qualified candidiates for US schools and by virtue of their state of domicile (ie Cali, Tx, NY) may not get in.

there are generally less people applying so you would be competing with less people and therefore a little lower level of stats maybe considered, whereas you will be competing with more people with higher numbers in the aug class.

i have noticed however my fellow "dumb class" classmates and I (Jan term here!!) seem to have made some decent matches (2/3 ortho matches are jan term i think the 3rd one is too, but i don't know him)!!

Thank you so much for the responses...

Are there any downfalls to entering the January term? Also, do you think I have a chance with my stats?

Thanks again!

You have a very good chance, just try to get around the mean mcat score of 26-27. There really is not a downfall to entering the January term except that the Aug 08 class matches in 2012 and Jan 09 matches in 2013.

Do you think that the potentially better matches in Jan term could be due to the fact that Jan term has a few more months of bridge time in clinicals thus allowing them more time to prepare for interviews, apply to more places, interview in more places, and network better with PDs? I was just curious.

maybe not the prep for interviews or smooze with PDs, , but there could be something to that- the jan term typically finishes cores earlier in the year (april to may) which allows for the chance to do some potentially important away rotations (so maybe some smoozing!), which in turn can get you some good LoRs.

It also allows for us to take more time off to say, study for CK and interviews (so maybe get to do more interviews) I was able to take 8 weeks off for CK and CS as well as take 5 weeks off for interviews in jan.

shouldn't you be asking about chances for AUC on the AUC forum?
