    Waitlist Question

I have just been "priority waitlisted" for the Jan. '08 term (class is full), with the option of taking a guaranteed spot in the UK for the global scholars program. I have read up on the GSP, but have trepidations about a program that is only a year old.

Most likely I will be doing the waitlist option, but I was curious if anyone has insight into the likelihood of being moved from "waitlisted" to "accepted" for the Jan. 08 term? It's really difficult for me to stay waitlisted when I know I could be starting in the UK in Jan. without question.

Anyone's input will be highly valued. Thanks.

    no one here knows.

But, do you have other options just in case you don't get a spot for Jan. or are you going to apply again for September?

i got pulled off the waitlist and was offered a spot in the january class about an hour ago, literally. i'm already committed at AUC and will most likely decline st. george's offer. to all you st george peeps out there, you got about 24 hours to convince me st george is better than auc! what do you guys think about my decision?

    Hey gottajob,

I can't speak for the SGU people, so I hope you aren't offended by me posting. I applied/interviewed for SGU but never heard back from them. It was my first choice school, I even turned down Ross, now im waiting for AUC to answer.

From what I understand from people who have attended both SGU and AUC both are good and will get you a solid education with good clinical rotations. I spoke with an AUC student who went to Kern Medical Center, to an SGU student who rotated in NYC etc. The basic question is what fits you the most in terms of class size/island life etc, and only you can answer that. In terms of school SGU is more well known, and I might be wrong in saying this but you could have better chances of becoming a specialist, verses family practice/internal medicine. SGU grads on this forum could probaly elaborate more, im sure.

Whatever you decide, just embrace it like you are gonna run up and grab the horns of a bull. I wish I could tell you the best choice of action but nobody really can when it comes down to your life. I also wish I were your in situation with the SGU acceptance(thats a hint right there). But in anycase the choice is yours, and I hope you are successful in whatever decision you make.

You are in an enviable position. Congratulations!

There are a couple differences between SGU and AUC.

    1. SGU's campus would rival many in the US. Not so AUC
    2. You will have a better chance of winning in the housing lottery at SGU if you choose to stay on campus. SGU has many super dorms.
    3. The biggest difference in my opinion is that SGU will arrange your elective rotations for you. All of SGU's cores and electives are Green book. SGU will allow you to do electives outside of their affiliations if you choose. AUC however, requires you to find your own elective rotations.

All the best. Wish you success.

i think you can do fine from either place. to help, just consider, without snark about revolutions (or volcanoes or hurricanes for that matter)
    1) can you get licensed in the states youre likely to be interested in from either school?
    2) check out matches the last few years. do folsk get the fields youre most likely to be interested in (ie can you get potentially competitive field) and
    3) get residency in the program your interested in (within a given field)
    4) pass rates on boards and
    5) % who make it to the boards WITh the class (ie dont drop out or decel)
    6) then worry about cost and lifesyle issues. because if you cant do what you want coming from your school, having a party for 2 years on the island at low cost wont help you sleep at night.
    Good luck!

its not up to us to convince you to pick sgu...you have to decide which one is better for YOU, but....

    1. if you hadn't put a deposit down at AUC (which is what i'm assuming you mean when you are committed to AUC) and say you recieve acceptances to both schools on the same day...which would you choose?

2.If you choose to stay with going to AUC, will you question whether you should have gone to SGU OR if you choose to go to SGU instead, will you have wondered if it was better to have stayed with AUC.

the gut answer to these questions will probably tell you more about which is the right choice for you.

    good luck with your decision!!

hmm... dilema here... AUC vs. SGU

    YES I HAVE SEARCHED!!!!!

okay i got my acceptance to both, and the deadline for AUC is coming up.

i have researched and have found out that SGU will put me in about 50k more debt when i get out, and i know that AUC is on a better island.
SGU has a 400 student class size, AUC around 150ish.

The reason why i havent chosen AUC for sure, is because of a couple things.

Which school will give me a better residency? it seems as if SGU is a step above AUC in recognition, and i mean hell, if they take in 400 students a year, and they've been open for about 30 years, and it's some what competitive, why shouldnt SGU get a better residency option than AUC?

can you guys give ur input? the amount of debt i leave with to me is irrelevent compared to the residency options i get. Thanks.

You -have- got the argument down pat. SGU is the creme of the crop, and dealing with expenses is the hassle, but when financial services offer relief programs, and you have a stable career to work your way out of debt when you step out of school; Really, it's the decision to strive for a better quality of education AND experience.
St. George's is recognized, and students have to -pay- for that recognition. But you've already proven you're capable of being recognized in turn. Go for SGU.
