521 points if you have insurance from back home, i would just use that instead of paying xtra for the school insurance which is useless anyway.
if you do get sick and its minor, consultation at the school clinic is free, meds you have to pay; so i would just pay out of pocket for the meds and any other simple lab work. cheaper then paying a few thousand for an insurance u dont need. if you do have a major illness, i wouldnt wanna stay in GND anyway for that, rather fly home and get taken care of back in US

510 points If you don't have insurance in the States or currently, will SGU require you to get a plan. Or can you go the island with no coverage?
no u have to have covrage.. but my job is what gives me my covrage. since I am going to GND I obv can not work so therefore I loose my coverage. Where can I find what is covered under the GND plan? Does anyone have an alterntive?
521 points here is the link, you need to login under mysgu

i strongly urge to get a US insurance, the sgu is useless literally. it just looks good on paper. if you do get sick in the US with sgu insurance, good luck with that

Looks like SGU has changed health insurance providers - it is now through UnitedHealthcare.

510 points Ok...I'm a little confused. I thought this insurance was only for while we are on the island. Besides we are only back in the States for a max of 3 months of the year during our first two years right?
So what would be the most economical in terms of just having coverage so we can be admitted to SGU and register for classes?
On a side note, would US plans (such as Kaiser, etc.) on a general rule of thumb, pay for expenses if you used services in Grenada?
521 points you need to contact your US insurance company to see if they will reimburse you for any medical expenses incurred in GND.

510 points A friend of mine got sick on the island, and her SGU insurance didn't cover $0.01 of her approximately $3000 USD in expenses.
SGU insurance is worth nothing--both on the island and in the US. If it's at all possible to get a reasonably priced US insurance plan, definitely get that.
As a general rule, you can get a better deal on just about everything outside of the school compared to what the school will offer you. Don't get me started on EdInvest . . .
6118 points Yeah, I've gone with the school's insurance plan, but finding out that it's completely worthless for almost anything, so I think I'm going to change options in the next renewal. They cover NOTHING, and everything's a fight.
