I agree wholeheartedly with Haterade, take another look at that Step 1 avg before you say that those scores look low...

if you look at it that way, then also 2 std and it's below national average

i was just speaking in terms of means, i didn't mean to say 230 is a bad or low score, but for me at least i somewhat expected higher means for transfers

but i'm just 1st termer so i dont know what the hell i'm talking about

when it comes to USMLE score- your right- 220 + is the magic number when it comes to many residency programs and application filters- 230+ is pretty coompetitve any way you look at it (its generally around a 95 2 digit score)

remember too that other thnigs go into factoring a transfer - its not just a step I /GPA thing- they still look at the MCAT, undergrad GPA, and ECs.

one of the most recent transfers to Drexel wrote the student guide that is a sticky, sent in corrections to 1st aid for step I and was asked to be a contributing editor to the 1st aid series (i'm sure he had high scores and gpa- but of course the added extra bit made him stand out)

generally people who are sucessful at transferring were borderline for US schools to begin with- many waitlisted and just didn't make it off...

Very few students transfer. However, don't come to Grenada thinking that you'll be able to transfer.

I have to say that I agree that these stats seem low. In my class, the people who transferred after second term all had 4.0s. However, some people transfer and repeat years at their new institution so perhaps they have lower stats? And while a very respectable score, I don't think 230 is a stand-out kind of score, especially if 220 is the minimum cutoff for some places, then 230 is not that much more than that!

Thanks for all the help so far everyone, I was just wondering, how does your undergrad GPA + MCAT play a role in transfering? Minimal? moderate? none at all hopefully?

Thought I'd weigh in.

Rokshana is pretty dead on. Without giving away private information, there were some things that were consistent among the SGU students that transferred into MSIII this year.
  • IEA (lowest GPA I think was mine at 3.6)
  • Publications (0-3)
  • ~30 MCAT
  • Strong LORs.
  • Step 1 score of 240+/99.
  • DES tutoring
  • Something *extra* that separates you from the other 15 applicants that satisfy the above stats.
  • Grateful to SGU for the chance to become doctors.
I hope that sets some people at ease, and I don't mean to be hokey with that last part about being grateful. SGU is a great school to which I owe more than I can repay.

I haven't finished it yet, but I started writing down some information about transferring here. Others like Ribosome have also written about this.

Hope it helps, topher.
the rumors were true

Yowl, that's a lot of not-being-a-mediocre-med-student. So where are those SGU Clinical Centers again?

sorry but... could someone let me know what IEA stands for?

and is that GPA "undergrad GPA included + averaged with GPA from med school"? or just GPA for med school? how much do you think they weigh in your undergrad stats as compared to med school stats?

IEA is the honor society at sgu. Its not so important that its IEA(because US schools really don't it either) as much as having the requirements for IEA- 4.0 after 1st term, 3.5 subsequent terms...since Rumors put his next to the IEA point, probably means the med school one.

I think it depends on how far into med school you are when you apply for transfer...after 1st year for a 2nd year position, UGA GPA and MCATs will play a bigger role than if you have completed 3rd year and have step I and II scores available...
