I asked my counselor about the seats, she said they don't have a waitlist yet and doesn't see one being started until early June.
Since its rolling admissions, I would think those of us who had a good interview should be in on first come first serve basis until all the seats are taken....unless the essay we write during the interview is a huge part of the application...am i right to assume this or should I apply to another school as a back up in case?
My two cents:

I think the tough part of this is knowing whether or not you had a "good" interview according to the SGU Admissions Committee. Even if your interviewer said he'd recommend you, he's still not on the Admissions Committee. There are people who thought they had good interviews several months ago that were not accepted (and there were still plenty of spots) - see Proteinpowda's posts. I would advise against assuming you'll get in just on the fact that you got an interview and felt it went well. I think you have a very good shot since you got the interview and your interviewer will recommend you, but it's definitely not a sure thing.

Wow...these posts are quite interesting!

I have an English exam tomorrow (and I just found out that I don't need it anymore for my application), so I'm browsing this discussion forum.

I was also interviewed on Tues, April 8th @ 1:15pm, and was accepted on Friday, April 11th. And the only reason that happened to some of us is because after the Tuesday interviews in TO, the adcom met on Friday back home (wherever that is!), and went through the applicants. So don't lose heart if you don't hear a decision soon...it all depends on the adcom.

I was actually horribly nervous during my interview, and I thought my interviewer didn't like me at all - he seldom smiled throughout the interview. And I was actually expecting him to tell me if he would recommend me or not...the fact that he didnt say anything just added to my anxiety. So if you think you had a good interview, you probably did.

Anyhow, all's well that ends well. See you all in August. (I can't believe we have six texts for anatomy alone...how in the world are we going to go through ALL of them in one semester!? oh goodness...I guess its time to make a relationship with my books :P)

Rokshana, I'm a little curious about your background. Are you an SGU grad?

Thats fantastic!
You must be really excited!

The reason why I asked is because, correct me if I'm wrong, you don't seem to approve very much of SGU, or is it being an IMG? Just speculation on my part.

Most SGU grads I know haven't told me anything negative about SGU, so it makes you wonder...not to mention, it gives you sort of a false? sense of security. When we're making such huge, and expensive decisions in life, its always good to know both sides of the story.

Soooo, since you've been at SGU for a while...have you ever been in contact with the 'bad' side of SGU at all???

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the forum and wanted to say hi. Also, I was wondering what you guys thought my chances were to be accepted into the August 2008 class?? I sent in my application online today and my references said they'll be mailing out my letters on Monday....I figure everything will be at the SGU office by the end of next week.

My stats are: GPA ~ 3.78
MCAT 29P and 30O

SGU signed a deal to have their students exclusively do their clinical rotations at New York City HHC hospitals for the next 10 years. HHC hospitals are the worst.

not negative, more realistic i think...

overall i am happy with the experience that i have had with sgu and am proud to be an alumna, but it has not been an easy haul (though med school in and of itself in GND or in the US is not an easy time), though many of the thing that are problematic are not exclusive to sgu or caribbean schools for that matter...

i am in a unique position in that i can compare between the US and offshore (to some extent- my masters was basically the 1st 2 years at a US med school and i was an SO of a US med student through his 3rd 4th year- you hear alot of the bad then!!) and many of the things we complain about, they complained about too...

but there are somethings (i've written extensively on this topic so look at some of my old posts) that are once and future problems unique to being an IMG. And altogether IF you have the ablity to get into a US school, it is worth it (even if it takes a year or 2) to try.

Off shore should be your LAST option, not your first choice, but IF you are going to come to school in the caribbean, IMHO sgu is the best choice overall (but them i'm biased), BUT - and i have long espressed this opinion-the other well established caribbean schools- AUC, Ross, Saba, are also great choices and depending on the person, may even be a better choice for them.

My advice is to come down to the caribbean with wide open eyes- without any rosed colored glasses--and i feel that it is the obligation of us that have come before you to make sure that your eyes ARE wide open....i loved living in GND, i learned alot from my professors and attendings, i have made friends here that hopefully will be with me for the rest of my life, and i got the opportunity that i was not goiing to get in the US--to get an MD and a great residency spot...all from coming to sgu.

please!! you obviously have not been in a Caritas hospital in NYC...

i rotate at Elmhirst and thought it was quite good...friends are rotating through there and Queens and have said the rotations have been good as well.

the opportunity to rotate at Bellevue is a great one i would think...imagine the pathology there!!

Hi all accepted aug '08 students. i was just accepted into the foundations of medicine program at SGU for fall and to st. matthew's university for fall. which do you think i should accept. i have a long list of pro and cons but wondering what other students might have to offer. maybe the pros outweigh the cons or vice versa? thanks a lot for your input.
