Thanks for sharing your timeframe UDontKnow... it gives some of us here a reference point.
What a killer 2-month wait... how do keep sane? I work out like an Olympian and then eat like a glutton (self defeating, all-in-all, I know). Nonetheless, congrats on your acceptance! |

Thanks for the congrats, Spartacus. I'm just happy to help out in any little way I can. You know if you think about it 2 months is not really that long and is a pretty good turn around time for rolling admissions. Nevertheless, you are correct that the waiting period does do a number on one's nerves. Currently I am trying to finish up my MPH degree by mid-summer. I am enrolled formally in 20 credit hours but actually working on 26--those extra 6 hours are my research lab work and thesis. I also work part time as an office assistant/research assistant at a lab/research project for spina bifida. All of the above did definitely help to pass the time. But it does become disheartening as this whole med school thing impacts the rest of your life. Our future livelihoods are at stake if you think about it. I actually ended up applying to St. George's University as a result that I would have not been able to afford going to a similar program based in India. I had applied to that program under the false impression that it qualified for FAFSA loans. I am unable to pay the private tuition loans that were coming at 7-8%. I was discouraged, considered throwing in the towel for med school, but I decided to give it a last ditch attempt. I am sure you saw my stats above and saw I didn't have the best time academically in undergrad. So I thought I had no chance whatsoever with St. George's. Let's face it, even though it's a Caribbean medical school---it has very high standards and I did not feel that I was competitive. Nothing was going right for me anyways so I thought I had nothing to lose--might as well try for the best school possible outside the US. I applied, folded my hands, and asked for divine intervention (you can call it whatever, I don't mean to step on anyone's toes). I don't know what the admissions committee saw in my file that they liked--if I sat on that committee I would have rejected someone with my file. Maybe the admission committee saw that I was giving it my all and more with this MPH degree, maybe I really impressed my interviewer (come to think of it, at the end of the interview I asked him more questions than he asked me--almost like I was interviewing him), whatever it was--I am so thankful that I have been giving this opportunity and I definitely want to make the best of it since there are probably people out there more deserving than me that will end up being rejected. But back to the original point, yeah it is stressful. I've actually lost about 20 lbs since January--unintentionally, just been so caught up in work. Spartacus, if you know any way for a vegetarian to bulk up and recover lost weight safely--I would greatly appreciate the tips. Maybe if you get accepted for this August, you could be my trainer so I can relieve stress from studying. Last edited by UDontKnow; 04-13-2008 at 02:37 PM. |

UDontKnow.... sounds great! If you share some good vegan recipes that I might enjoy and help prevent me from being a human food disposal, its a deal!
No, really though... I really do appreciate (the majority) of posters here who seem genuinely to post their experiences, opinions and help out. To come here and relate your story, post your grades/stats, tell complete strangers about your life and ask for subjective feedback ... in my mind, is very humbling. It also takes a tough skin! ... I myself, am a private person at times and know it takes a lot to open up .... more props to those that do so on an open message board! |
