Hoping to get my foot in the door for Tulane Med...they were my #1 choice this year...but they didn't want me :-)

It's people like you that make me rethink---whether i m making the right choice or not. Here are my stats: 3.85c and 3.84s GPA, MCAT first attempt--27N (9PS, 11B, 7V)---i was getting 30 on my practice, lots of ER and research exp with research funded.

At first i wasnt gonna apply to SGU and thought of working my butt off and do really well on the MCAT and pull that 7V to 10V and i know there would be a great hope of getting in---but then i spoke to a bunch of residents and chief residents from Carribean and they told me that i would be wasting my year by not going to the Carrib. and especially SGU...so then i just went ahead and thought if i have worked hard for four years then i probably could for another 4.

At this point, i m still confused whether i should just spend the summer studying for the MCAT or just SGU it. Although, i m leaning more towards SGU. I hope i get in.

you should study for the MCATs and reapply to the US schools- your gpa is well within competitive range- if your MCATs were at least a 30- doable with study and repetition- questions, questions, questions....

as it has been said before sgu (or any caribbean school)should be your LAST choice...after you have done ALL you can to get into a US school...i have written on this extensively on the reasons why (search them out if you need to read them), yes sgu will give a good chance to get a good, even great residency, but even the last ranked USMD program will give you more opportunities...

its not a waste...and sgu isn't going anywhere..if you don't get into a US school, with a 3.8/30 you will most likely still get into sgu a year later.

that's cool that your school does that... I've almost always gotten the short end of the stick on the GPA scale. I feel like there's such a big difference between a B+ and an A- on the scale out of 4, but out of 100 you can be half a percent off and it wouldn't look that bad... this has happened a few times to me where i'd have an 89.6 or something and end up with the B+ instead of getting "rounded up" to an A- but what can you do

how does SGU grade? P/F/ honors??
Thats seems to be how many schools calculate the gpa, except my school was a little more strict with the B's. For instance a B- was 80-83, and B 84-86.

SGU grades for the first 3 years are A,B,C for 90, 80,~70 respectively and 4th year is pass/fail.

I'd say - go for it! Stay back and give the MCAT, and you might get over 30. You'll only miss a year (although I know a year is a long time).

What you can also do is try to defer your SGU entrance to Jan (or reapply for Jan), and apply to US med schools, and if you don't get any US interviews by December, join SGU in Jan. You only miss one term.

A third option is to start SGU this year, try to get A's on all your first year courses, get a great MCAT score this summer, and then try to transfer to your preferred university in the US (although the chances are slim, but not impossible).

If I were you, I'd keep the SGU acceptance on the side (maybe pay the $1000 deposit to hold your seat), give the MCAT a shot this summer and see what I get, before making the final decision whether to join SGU or apply to US schools.

But be sure that you're getting at least 30 on your practices before giving the MCAT again - you don't want your score to fall lower.

keep in mind if you defer a semester to january, you are actually deferring a complete year since you will have to match in 2013. Regarding studying your butt off to raise that 7 to a 10, Verbal is VERY resistant to change no matter how hard you work at it, and has a lot to do with luck as well, seeing as now there is only 40 questions on it. Just an advice.. working your *** off in Verbal does not guarantee you an improvement on that section as much as the other sections (PS, **). As an example, I took the MCAT 4x in a span of 1.5 yrs and my verbal scores were 7, 4, 6, 7. Maybe you might have better luck.

I agree about the Verbal. You can't cram for it. You're either made for it, or you're not. I gave the MCAT twice, and improved my overall score by double digits the second time around. In Verbal, however, I only improved by a point (went from 8 to 9).

1. you can't defer at sgu- i've only heard of it once and it was because his father passed away...

2. the increase in his score doesn't have to come from the verbal section (though that would be the lowest score)- a point there would be possible and a point or 2 in the PS would make the magic 30.

3. transferring after the 1st year is very limited - only know of drexel doing that - most places will want a Step I score and you can't take this until after 2nd year

4. its one year- and the the hassles that are eliminated by a US acceptance is well worth the loss of one year.

Rokshana - im confused - you are a SGU student right? Do you think that only US MD schools are better that caribbean , or does DO schools fall under the catagory of 'better than caribbean' as well.
And also - you have been such an advocate of St Georges, Im just surprised to see your recent posts about how waiting it out, and not involving yourself with SGU is better than considering SGU.
Not trying to attack you, just trying to understand.
