geezus. really!?! it's not even like your mcat is grossly below average, and your gpa rocks. would you even go to sgu if you got accepted? with a high mcat retake you have to be able to get into a us allo with that gpa... i'd take the year off... maybe even a 3rd mcat if the 2nd one doesn't work out so well, good luck!@##!#$!##$

.....both were significantly improved due to Fall '07 GPA
MCAT: 24R (yeah...below the SGU average)
ECs: 7 years research experience, 1 year clinical
LOR: waived my right to see 2 of them, but the 3rd letter from my research PI is amazing...IMHO

I interviewed in November...updated my file with improved grades and still no word. I was told that apps are only reviewed the 1st week of the month but my filed was updated in mid-January. If they wanted to reject me....just do it already. I have no intention of accepting FOM if it is offered...I already have an excellent plan B and am retaking the MCAT in May so I am considering the thought of asking to have my application withdrawn from consideration. We'll see....I'll contact my counselor in mid-April.

I'm just wondering what is the gradescale conversion to a GPA. I had a 87% undergrad average but I have no clue how that would translate to a GPA. University of Saskatchewan has yet to change their grading style.

I probably wouldn't go to SGU if I was accepted...that's why I'm thinking about asking to have my application withdrawn. My plan B consists of rocking the MCAT (got a 37 on my 1st AAMC practice test), retaking Orgo 2, moving to New Orleans with my family...volunteer at one of the hospitals while working as a research assistant at Tulane. Hoping to get my foot in the door for Tulane Med...they were my #1 choice this year...but they didn't want me :-)

If you get accepted, just defer it for a year. At least that would be a backup plan. Unless you plan to spend more than a year trying to get into US schools. About trying to get in the door by doing research, it rarely works for getting direct admission. But doing research helps pad up the application. Trust me I tried, knew the chairman of my department, knew most faculty really really well, but in the end the 3.1 GPA wasn't gonna cut it. With your stats, an mcat above 30 will increase your chance incredibly. Just apply June 1st and apply broadly. You might be able to matriculate in Fall 09.

Of course...I'm definitely not planning on the research gig sealing the deal for admissions. I'm just trying to strengthen my application in anyway that I can feasibly can. I'm willing to take up to two years since that is what my parents have given me before they kick me out Before I come to the Carib...I want to be able to honestly tell myself that I did everything I could to get into a US school and I think 3 shots would do it

I'd say for most undergrad schools that'd be a B+ so a 3.3... i think

A = 4.0 = 95-100 (generally)
A- = 3.7 = 90-94 "
B+ = 3.3 = 85-89 "
B = 3.0 = 80- 84 "
B- = 2.7 = 75-79 "

but it always depends on the prof ultimately

that's cool that your school does that... I've almost always gotten the short end of the stick on the GPA scale. I feel like there's such a big difference between a B+ and an A- on the scale out of 4, but out of 100 you can be half a percent off and it wouldn't look that bad... this has happened a few times to me where i'd have an 89.6 or something and end up with the B+ instead of getting "rounded up" to an A- but what can you do

how does SGU grade? P/F/ honors??

yeah if you're gonna rock the real mcats like you have the practice ones, you're gonna have a fantastic year off before you get into med school in the states. JUST DON'T GET ARRESTED OR DO ANYTHING STUPID ON BOURBON STREET (or any other street for that matter)

Definitely u r right. After the US application cycle is over call the admissions office of the schools you applied to and ask THEM what u need to do to improve your application. I realized after two years of research that I should have done masters to improve my GPA. I had 32 mcat so it wasn't a prob. But I learned a lot from research, not to mention made lots of contacts.
