from what I understand....the numbers break down something like this:

7 applicants for every seat (don't know how many are interviewed)
1 acceptance for every 2 interviewees

...I might have these numbers wrong...do a thread search...I know this topic has already been discussed

I need some opinions. with this MCAT score and my grades and extracurricular, I feel i have a strong chance of acceptance in a texas school next year if I were to apply.
This is the hard part, would you guys advise me to sit out one year from SGU and apply, or just suck it up and go to SGU? I'm pretty set on starting med school already, but just want to get opinions. Thanks
If it were me I'd sit out and reapply next year. FWIW, I scored a 29 (P??) with a 3.6 sGPA and the only TX school that offered me an interview was TCOM and the fact that I didn't apply to them the previous year and didn't have any osteopathic experience are likely the 2 main reasons I languished on their wait-list; my 1st of two interviewers that day gave me a hard time about those things, and the length of time between my son's birth and my marriage, and accused me of being a "B.S. artist"...crotchety old man. Of course my cGPA was only a 3.1 and I was almost 28 at the time of my interview.

All that considered unless you've got a legitimate, pressing reason to start med school this year I'd wait and give it 1 more try, though the above poster is correct that the 7v will likely give you some problems with a few ad comms. I just takes 1 to side with you, however...

It is in other areas where to me SGU greatly outshines Ross or any other carib. school. Your stats are very competitive for caribbean schools, hopefully you have some good e.c.'s to pad your application some. Based on just numbers you should have a great chance.
hey thanks Vanillaroma!
I don't have a lot of extracurriculars in terms of clinical exposure...only volunteered in an operating room for a few months. But I do have extensive research experience(i think)...i did 2 yrs of research as an undergrad in the same lab which led to a publication and a summer fellowship grant. And I have been a full-time lab tech for a yr after graduation at a med school...and a publication for that research is in process...I didn't get any interviews at a US school...i really really hope i get in at sgu for the august class
Btw..how is the attrition rate for sgu? I read someplace else that for Ross its really high..but not sure about sgu...

Your research should really help out quite a bit. The attrition rate is really low compared to other schools, I have seen a statistic that stated 5% and my interviewer told me that it was very low but did not give me an exact number. She did state that that roughly 15% or so will decel a semester during basic science, which to me is not a big deal, it just delays graduation and I feel it will not affect me.

Interview Advice

ameyer1211
I had mine yesterday. There is a 10 min essay right when you get there. You chose from 3 questions. Mine where (to my best recollection) (1) Explain a defining moment in your adult life. (2) Define three characteristics that would help in your path to becoming a physician.(3) Describe the person who has influenced you the most. Then the interviewer just ask you a few questions and then most importantly he/she ask you if you have any questions, THIS IS YOUR TIME TO SHINE, ask questions and promote discussion that not only show your interest in medicine but also SGU.
BUT the most important thing is to relax and be yourself. Before my interview i went to the gym washed dishes and downed a red bull and said LETS do THIS.
Good Luck.

i think i m just gonna suck it up and take the MCAT again and apply for Jan 09 admissions...if i dont get in at that time...Ross is always there. From what I am hearing abt the rotations with Ross, I dont think I really want to go there! [I have 21L and 3.6 science and 3.5 overall].

Do you guys know if SGU requires us to take the labs?

Thanks

I hear ya....I had an acceptance to Ross but turned it down b/c of the situation surrounding clinicals. It could get better by the time I get there...or not. That's not a risk I'm willing to take.

Seriously! The whole point is not to just get to medical school but to become a good doctor..if clinicals are not going to go well...than there is no point in it.

I don't know if I should try for SGU right now or not. So I am debating whether I should apply and see what happens, or whether I should take the MCATs again and shoot for January admissions.
