Just wanted to know is there any huge difference btw attending Ross or SGU in terms of recognition?
Also, I just submitted my application to sgu for the Aug 2008 class....it seems like I'm really late by the posts above...I hope not too late
My credentials are not really outstanding...mcat: 9V, 10B, 9P..28R composite score...and cGPA: 3.4, sGPA:3.2

You still are not really late, the deadline is mid-june and apparently plenty of positions are still available. As far as Ross vs. SGU, of course we are going to be biased here, however as far as recognition is concerned there is not much difference between the two. It is in other areas where to me SGU greatly outshines Ross or any other carib. school. Your stats are very competitive for caribbean schools, hopefully you have some good e.c.'s to pad your application some. Based on just numbers you should have a great chance.

Got my interview tomorrow in San Diego. Advice: Submitted application Jan 9. I was awarded the interview at least 3 weeks ago but I had to call to move my application out of a pile of others (just call them it helps). I called on Thursday. Still am debating on SGU, AUC or Post Bac program.

I know an Doc who went to AUC. He loved it and it got him to where he wanted to be. He applied to St. George's but did not get in. He really wanted to go to SGU. He told me SGU was number one, but expensive. AUC is still really good. He also said that Ross used to be really good but has fallen apart after having been sold to many different owners the past few years. They have a clinical issue right now. So, I would say shoot for SGU, but AUC is a viable option that will still get you to where you want to be.

i had my interview last Friday....the one piece of advice I can give is that my interviewer was very impressed that I mentioned that being ethical was an important characteristic in not only becoming a doctor but for doctors to have.....he said that the interviewer either highly recommends, recommends, or does not recommend the interviewee back to the committee, I don't think the interview is a huge deal unless your GPA or MCAT score is borderline....he told me that he recommends students with anything under a 24 MCAT for additional classes on test taking in Grenada or foundations of medicine program....my interviewer was someone who is on the board for admissions but any decision is made by the whole board.......good luck!

Hey guys, just wanted to drop by and wish you all luck. I'm the one that started this thread, so my stats are in the beginning. I recently got my Jan MCAT score, 30R (7V, 12P, 11B). I need some opinions. with this MCAT score and my grades and extracurricular, I feel i have a strong chance of acceptance in a texas school next year if I were to apply.
This is the hard part, would you guys advise me to sit out one year from SGU and apply, or just suck it up and go to SGU? I'm pretty set on starting med school already, but just want to get opinions. Thanks

From what I've been told the MCAT is the universal way of evening things out between schools with GPA's. GPA's vary between schools and professors. The MCAT is pretty constant..at least that's how I would view it from an admissions standpoint.
I'd start prepping your butt off to retake the MCAT and show them what you're made of!

Phospholipid...You need to ask yourself...what do you want to do. Do you want to be a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon? If so it'll be harder coming from SGU but not impossible. It all comes down to you. You can do the exact same things coming from SGU that you can do anywhere else.
As far as taking the year off...
Applying to a US school goes like this:
By May have all your transcripts to AMCAS b/c it'll take them 6 weeks to process. Then choose 20-30 schools to apply to....don't be silly and just apply to a few..the odds are too low. This initial round of applications will cost about eight hundred dollars.
Have 5 letters of reccomendation to go.
2 or 3 from science professors, one from within your major, and one non-science professor. A doctor you shadowed and a volunteer organization would be great as well.
Do you have any leadership experiences? Research? How much volunteering that is non-medically related? Like habitat for Humanity? How much Clinical Experience do you have? Enough that you know what the next ten years of your life will be like?
And when this is all in order on June 15th get your applications OUT FIRST and be the first to get them in the pile and when your secondaries come pay the 65-$130 fee for each of your schools...and get them filled out ASAP. Also have a passport sized photo of yourself.
And then when this is all said and done and you get your interviews be prepared to shell out more money to fly around and try and get in somewhere. Yeah it's great to stay in state but if you're going to take a year off you're incurring too much risk just applying in state.

And also..your MCAT scores...you should be good...not sure though.... the 7V will hurt you but they might overlook that based on your R writing.
So my advice: Start poking around on studentdoctor.net and start talking to everyone on there who's applying to US schools and getting rejected when they have all the stuff I already mentioned. It's a great resource for the US schools. They know a lot more about it than I do.
