Yeah...I'm really not in a rush for a decision. I probably won't accept the offer (I've already turned down Ross)....I'm still weighing my options but I'm thinking about waiting a year and trying for US schools again. I'm waiting to see how the MCAT goes in May...

I'm considering the same thing too....
When you ask my pre-med advisor or the one professor I really trust (she's head of the biology and society dept and knows a ton about this stuff) they're on the fence about it. We had a nice chat about the "what if" I don't get into US schools this round today.
And I can't decide either way so I called the doctor I'm interninn with who happens to be an SGU graduate (he graduated from NYU with honors and couldn't get in). His advice "go to SGU. Unless you're really looking to specialize like ortho or something you'll do great."
And again people have come out of SGU and gotten ortho residencies; radiology; hell even AUC produced a neurosurgeon.
And there are a lot of perks to SGU; you can go all over the country for clinicals and try out some hospitals where you would want to do your clinicals...you can spend some time in England; and you have that month elective in Prague. Also SGU follows the more traditional curriculum and most US students really don't like the newer PBL formats.
So the question really should be: Where will I become a better doctor? SGU probably offers a superior education to a US school...with a less stuffy atmospere. Sadly the question is where I can get the most competitive residency so I can make the most when I come out...read a copy of medical economics...you can make more hourly as an ACLS RN in alot of cases. It's pathetic.
Do yourself a favor; observe doctors that went to US schools and IMG's and then DO's. Who has the better bedside manner? From my experience IMG's. I haven't worked with DO's yet.

Well....I know that I'm capable of doing much better on my MCAT this time around....my practice tests are already 6-8 points higher than my original. I also have everything else going for me (research, grades, shadowing). My family is also moving to New Orleans this fall and I will working as a research assistant at Tulane so I'm hoping this will help (in some small way) get my foot in the door.

I'm willing to do whatever it takes to stay in the states....I'm young and I'm blessed with a wonderful family who is willing to support me in whatever way they can.

thanks for the post! i definitely agree with you. it will be nice to get out of country for studies. and just because its not in states...it should have more emphasis on studies..since they would want their students to do well on the USMLE's! im pumped up abt it...just hoping i get good enough score on MCATs...so that i can get in SGU!

More like the other schools aren't tough enough to get into and give the Caribbean schools a bad name.

Let me repost what I wrote on the AUC forum:

A lot of people on this forum don't understand how hard it is to get into medical school.
I cringe when I see posts say I got a 19 or 21 on my MCAT and have a 2.9 GPA followed by what are my chances of getting into this school? Is this who you want to be your future doctor? Someone that accepts having a score like that rather than re-taking the exam and TRYING HARDER? They shouldn't be asking what their future chances are; they should be STUDYING.
That's the problem a lot of the times...students just want what's good enough; not the best that they can do. And when you get surrounded by students like this on this forum you risk becoming lax.

To make an analogy I switched Gym's over to Golds. I was already in pretty good shape; I benched about 375 at the time weighing 210 and could run consistent 8 min miles...yet My room-mate thought I was crazy saying everyone in there would be in better shape than you. To me it served as motivation and reminded me everyday that I could become better.

Luckily that's most often not the case for AUC but go over to studentdoctor.net
The US students are worried about getting in with 3.8 and 35's on their MCATS. I'm not saying I'm all that..my GPA was inconsistent but if you really want something you'll work for it. Hell I had a 31R and I might be retaking the exam in April b/c I know I can do better.
