I went to NYU!!! I miss the city. Anyways, the current class, and I'm pretty sure the Aug class and us as well, live in Kirkley Lodge. This is what one guy said about it:

"Ill tell you a bit about Kirkly Lodge as this is where I stayed. Kirkly has its ups and downs. First, its not a bad place, its clean and stuff. Kitchen has a refrigerator/freezer, table with chairs, and an oven/stove. Its an ok kitchen, nothing great, nothing bad.

Living rooms vary in size, luck of the draw. Showers are good with ok pressure and temps. Bedrooms are a nice size and you get a huge desk also. Expect to see some weird things, I dont exacly agree with the engineers who designed some of these things. For instance, the sink in the bathroom has two fawcets, one for really hot boiling water, and the other for really cold freezing water, no mixing for warm water. Your supposed to put the rubber plug in the sink, fill it, and let them mix there, which is soooooooooooooooooooooo inconvenient since the water gets dirty and you have to keep refilling it, and brushing teeth is annoying and washing face and oh well, you get the point. Thank God the shower isnt like that !!!! Internet is included in each bedroom with the cost. Dont be fooled however, whats free is the lowest possible speed, like dial up speed. You have to pay to upgrade, not bad if your just checkin email and Angel and stuff, but dont expect to download or upload much !!!

The desk in the bedroom is sooo stupid too, yeah its big and thats nice, but the lamp is permanently mounted way over on the side where you cannot sit, so its not well lit, youll really prob wanna get a little desk lamp, (UK adapter also like for your laptop too) or get one from there cheap that you can toss out after the year.

Kirkly Lodge has a court yard in the middle which sometimes can be nice, and other times is just neglected and looks like a tropical rain forrest, you will see what I mean. There is a gate with a number code that you have to dial to open in order to get into the KL courtyard, and thus your apt, its a nice touch to safety, but sometimes its not working...

Finally the thing about Kirkly Lodge is this..... last term had a real big problem with maintenance, they didnt fix things when they should, some people went a while without warm water, some without light in the bedroom (only use strange bulb hard to find), the whole court yard thing, etc.... random stuff. We made alot of noise about this however and set up a protocol with the SGU staff to adress this problem. The idea now is that if any SGU student at KL needs something repaired, you will log your problem with the staff in a little book they keep, and it will be addressed within 24 hours. I think this is a sweet deal. So im guessing that next term shouldnt have these problems.

All in all, its like a dorm, some would say it looks like a prison yard, but everyone has their opinions. Its not a bad temporary place in light of the new changes. If your lookin for fancy shmancy, you can take a look around the city if you arrive early enough and check out some of the "flats" in town. There are some really nice places out there if your willing to pay the price.

I think this pretty much gives you a good idea of the place. Good luck with stuff !!!!"

Hey thats really great info. on Kirkley lodge. I was wondering about that place. I agree with you and think living in the UK will be a great experience...by the way I was told that there would be tutors for us, they are students from the semester ahead of us.

Hey everyone,

I was just recently accepted into the Jan 08 GSP at SGU. I was wondering what you all will be doing until then.

Ive done my share of traveling this year and was hoping to get a head start on some of the courses in medical school. I want to make the best of the free time I have next semester.

I would like to audit medical school-like courses in the United States (ie, FL, NY, NJ, CA) for the Fall semester. Specifically, Gross Anatomy, Histology, Biochemistry, and/or Cell Biology. Ive already found some of these courses in the undergraduate world, but Im specifically looking for graduate work.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

hey messy...i think that everyone will know that we are sgu students beacause northumbria does not have a medical school and therefore will not have any other med students taking courses there...also, i believe our grading will be based on a curve with gsp students only

nice..u know how many students they took last semester there? and the tutoring thing. if it is only for a year that we are there than we woudl have no one to help us for the 2nd semester..they really should extend it to about another half a year and just have us come in for the st.vincent thing.. oh the person who is trying to audit classes??? um, why? first of they al recommend not to do that. 2 u can not audit medical school courses, maybe just regular grad like a master's or PhD. three I don't get how that would give you a leg up but if thats your progative. Four if want to do that, why dont you just start reading the books that they require for the firts semester ahead of time.. it might be cheaper than actaully auditing a class

Yea I was wondering about second semester as well...I'm going to try and get an anwer for that. I agree on the auditing classes thing we are really just supposed to relax the semester before because the next four years will be very painful! Messy have you applied yet?

The school received all of my material April 1st and on April 27th they sent me a letter to interview for the GSP August class. I interviewed on May 23 and they called me to tell me I was accepted on June 4th. They sort of rushed my decision because I was already accepted at other carib schools for August 07 and I needed to know asap. Also, while I was interviewing the interviewer suggested I begin in Jan '08 so that I could finish writing my thesis before starting med school. And that is why I am starting in Jan. as opposed to Aug. If I were you I would send in all of the materials and just have them wait for your score, this may speed things up
