It is you Messy... but thanks for the concern. I am OK with GSP.. just like most of us are OK with Caribbean Med school, but I am saying there are things that need to be worked out.

1) Housing obligation for first term is not fair in Newcastle. For Grenada maybe, but out here it is not like we are on Campus housing getting use to the way things work.

2) Licensing issues is just something that should of been worked out ahead of time and not just assume that we can work things out afterwards.

What do you mean that UK isn't the best place to work in and how are their standards different from that of Canada and U.S.
I would think that Canada and U.K. would have similar standards considering the Queen is still a figure head and a person of importance.
NO Canada much closer to the US then the UK.

You will figure things out when you get here.

ONE really annoying thing is the lack of recycling.

it's not as bad as it sounds. the rooms are furnished; electricity, water, internet is all included. I think people are complaining just because they aren't used to "real" living situations. Most problems have been sorted out, with the main one left being an inconsistent internet connection - which really hasn't been an issue except for the past week.

The biggest complaint I have about Kirkley is that we are paying a lot more than we would be if we rented an apartment on our own.

Don't regret enrolling in GSP. I'm having the time of my life. There's so much I am able to experience here that US med students will never be able to.

Any questions, feel free to PM me because I don't really check the threads thoroughly.

Parish's Internet problems have been since Midterm!!! Don't believe me ask someone else.

I agree with the cost.. and that is the main reason housing rubbed me the wrong way.

The GSP program itself is fine and I agree with Tim about the experience being great.

if u have the option, dont live at kirkley

I live there this term and it is a huge rip off and a mess. there is only 2 washers and dryers for over 100 students and 1 machine was broken for a few weeks and it is constantly giving trouble. the owner of the apartments is a hassle to deal with and she gives off an attitude that she cant be bothered even though the students are paying rediculous amounts for the housing. at the beginning of the term, there were timers installed on room heaters and water heaters, and there was a big fight over that, and it finally got reversed. internet is slow or not working at times. maid service is once a week but they often do not come at all. the enterance gate had a key code that you could just punch in a number to get in without a key, but it was broken during the second week and no effort has been made to fix the gate, everyone has to use their key. the metro pass for the train is 40 £ every 4 weeks, and the last possible train you take to go home is at 1130 pm, limiting the amount of time you can study on campus. overall i just feel that the owner does not realize that we are paying a huge sum for this housing and we shuold have our needs catered to, yet she gave us the attitude that we are always inconveniencing her by asking her to fix our washers/dryers/broken heaters/ internet. my genuine advice is to seek housing that is within walking distance of campus so you are not at the mercy of the metro rail or people who are not kind to deal with. it will probably be cheaper anyway. ps the walls are thin in kirkley and you can always hear conversation, noise, music, FOOTSTEPS!

Thanks for the replies...I guess some seemed hopeful! I wonder how feasable it is to find your own housing if you are unmarried and don't have any pets or children...Has anyone ever tried this?

wow, thanks alot for the info "q". My biggest concern going to either campus is noise and i know from personal experience that housing with thin walls is basically useless for studying. I'll see if i can get housing closer to campus or if were even allowed to.

Hello everyone- I was accepted for GSP Jan 2008 and I'm really looking forward to meeting you all in the UK!

Is there a facebook or myspace group for our class? Thanks!
