Yes, I got offers as late as the beginning of January! It is appropriate to start calling after they have downloaded all your stuff and it's been a few weeks. You especially want to get after programs that you are really interested in.

One thing to keep in mind as you progress through your interviews and make some decisions about favored programs is that there are plenty of applicants, particularly IMGs, who are very aggressive about calling and expressing their interest in programs to PDs and generally PDs like this. There are two people in my program that basically talked their way in. If there is a program that you know is right for you, start working them. Don't be obnoxious but be persistent. Of course, don't lie either - you NEVER want to tell a program that they are your #1 choice if it's not true.

i got most of my offers from late october to mid november, but did get a few in december as well. i think some of them were waiting for the deans letter while others were having people cancel interviews and those spots were opening up. my program just started reviewing apps and sending out invites recently. as dunsoon said, i think it would be appropriate to start calling programs a few weeks after they have downloaded your apps. it certainly cannot hurt to call them and some PDs may like that.

hmmm...is it appropriate to call or e-mail the PD's and what do you say to them when expressing your interest? Do you express your interest and then ask them if they are interested in you?

Does anyone know how much time in advance you should give programs if you are cancelling their interview?

Thanks guys...Nov 1st is just around the corner so let's all hope for the best!

It is very appropriate - you tell them what you want. For example, if they are your first choice, tell them so. If you have something to add to your application, i.e. a new publication or something else great, email them to tell them. If you get an offer to sign out of the match from someone else but you still want to get into your first choice, call them and tell them you got an offer to get a feel for how likely it is that they will make an offer or rank you to match. Stuff like that. But NEVER NEVER NEVER lie or bluff - PDs talk to each other.

You should give programs as much advance notice as you can, at least a couple of weeks.
