You are correct - salaries are now fixed, i.e. each hospital pays the same salary to all residents at one level. Salaries vary from hospital to hospital, the general trend being that more prestigious hospitals offer lower salaries for residents (and sometimes attendings) than less competitive hospitals.
Generally, one can assume that if a program consistently has unfilled spots, that program is less competitive. It does not necessarily mean anything about the hospital as a whole or other programs within that hospital. For example the anesthesia program may be very good and fills every year but the psychiatry program sucks, is about to get shut down, and therefore doesn't fill their spots. I don't think the government cares WHO the spots are filled by, that's for the program to decide. Some programs that don't fill are not necessarily sucky programs because in any given year they may have ranked a fewer number of applicants because they were not willing to scrape the bottom of the barrel or they made pre-match offers that got turned down at the last minute. Even very competitive programs may go unfilled once in a while. But yes, if they do not fill their spots year after year, they probably are one of the least popular programs for whatever reason. |

Massachusetts Interviews?
Hey Guys,
Anyone get an interview at Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University Internal Medicine program or have any info about it? How about the UMass program? I want to know if they're worth scheduling. Thanks! |

california
Just to let you know, a friend of mine got a prematch offer in California (IM in santa barbara). I don't know if this is a common thing to do or not, but he set up a 4 week rotation at the hospital (outside of SGU's network), and got the offer that way. It seems like a lot of people want to go to CA but it's hard to get rotaion spots there with our affiliates. Just something to consider...

its still pretty early in the interview season. at this point last year i had maybe 4-5 interviews and ended up with 17. plus where i matched i wasnt even offered an interview until late november so hopefully those interview offers continue to pick up for you guys. also remember that as people cancel interviews more spots open up for others.
