scores are extremely important for surgery so make sure you learn the material well for the steps but also do well in your courses. some surgery programs look at class rank so it is also imperative to do well.

do well in your surgery rotation. get to know the surgery faculty well. you'll need three surgery letters for a lot of programs including the chairman.

try to do research if you can and try to publish a case report with a resident.

finally, as a foreign grad applying to surgery apply to MANY programs.

Thanks seagoddess.........regarding the research opportunity, would that take place during the 3rd and 4th clinical years?

sometimes you'll have opportunities to do research at the hospital you rotate at so yes mainly during the clinical years.

hey i sent you a private message but i guess i'll ask this on here any way. I am very interested in anesthesia and so I wondering if you could either post your step 1 score or at least a ballpark score needed to match into anesthesia. also have you applied to NJ programs? and how many programs did you apply to?
thanks for the help.

More info

Hey RussianJoo,

I did get your message and I can answer here if you want. Step 1 was a 93 and Step 2 97. I also did research before med school and was published. My interviews are all over the place. I applied to over 50 programs. I applied in NJ and so far my only interview there is at UMDNJ. If you have any other questions I will be happy to answer them. Good luck to all and keep posting so we all know what to expect!!

I am sorry for my ignorance but what's 93 in the three number score? 220? 230? Also did you apply at St. Barnabas in livingston and St. Joe's in paterson? Isn't UMDNJ a university program and thus it makes it better than a community program, so one would think that if you got an interview from a university program you should get interviews form those community programs correct? thanks for the quick reply. and good luck to you on your interviews.

it varies from year to year what the 2digit to 3 digit correlations- for the step I in 2006- 220 was around a 90 so i would guess that a 93 was in the neighborhood of 229?

for step II this year- 97 would be around 235 or so...

it can seem random how a program picks...some university programs may interview 600 people for 40 pgy-1 spots, others 50 or 20 spots- so it depends on where they are selective.

and again, blanket statements about university vs community shouldn't be made ...remember cleveland clinic is a community program...
