oh, its common enough practice, in fact some will post on their website their programs' policy of only sending out invitations for interview (too many apps to repsond to all).

In the electronic age and with decent software implementation, responding to even a few thousand applicants with a generic e-mail should only take seconds to minutes. Call me old-fashioned but with the amount effort we put into our applications and the fees we pay, I don't think a simple response is too much to ask for.

Gut Reaction
No, not if the first look went well. There is a chance that something could go wrong on the second go around.

that's a good point... i just interviewed at a program in Ohio and i really liked it. i felt it had mostly everything i'm looking for in a program.
some guy in the group said he was going to come for a second look. i was just wondering if coming for a second look would change people's ranking...

Hmmmm
It is hard to keep up with what other candidates are doing. This individual may not go back for a second look. You might, and if something goes wrong, that's what they will remember.
You already have enough information from your first interview to make a decision (positive impression, everything you want in a program). Even if you rank the program high and don't match, it may or not be related to whether you went back for a second look. But of course if you feel strongly, then you can always go.... |

2nd look
For the most part I'd say only do a second look if you have more questions about a program as opposed to trying to show "interest". The only second look I did was going to a program I was seriously considering but had a couple reservations after the interview. After doing so it gave me a clearer picture and I had a much easier time come ranking. I'd have serious reservations about any program that actually factors in wether someone did a second look or not.

I've heard that second looks won't improve your ranking for the most part. Programs are supposed to rank by quality/fit, not interest, of candidates just as I would imagine you would do the same when submitting your ROL.
2nd looks are supposed to be about you resolving any questions you have about a program that you feel could be answered better by personal experience rather than verbally. Another good reason would be if you were torn between 2 programs and needed the 2nd look to break the tie. |
