for applying to medical school
510 points for applying to medical school
well, all i know is that the school does a criminal background check before they place you for clinical rotations, so if you have a criminal record I would strongly recommend you see a lawyer and ask them if this will be an issue later on in your carrier. The school might not do a criminal background check when accepting people, but clinical placement and later on for state licensing there are definitely background checks, so what's the point of applying and completing your basic sciences if you can't go on to clinical rotation because of your criminal record. Definitely go see a lawyer, one dealing with medical licensure.
510 points dude...in all honesty..i didnt make this thread to sound tough..recently i was pulled over for a broken tail light and the next thing you know im slapped with a petty possession ticket...i went to court and they gave me a misdemeanor..that simple...you think i enjoy having a misdemeanor? since then i havent smoked anything...since then ive been working my butt off to get good grades cuz im stressing the hell out that if i have a misdemeanor it will affect me getting into med school because i know it affects you to become a lawyer..im stressing out because iono if i can practice medicine then with a misdemeanor on my record...this is the only spot on my record..i have no other accidents..i have no other tickets...so you can label me whatever you want..all i asked was a simple question..but thank you for your answer
I don't know possession of marijuana might be nothing in Canada, but as a future doctor it shows that you have potential to misuse controlled and illegal substances. And as a doctor you have access to all these drugs so if I were you I would be very worried about your medical carrier, if you do get accepted into a medical school you'll have a very hard time it maybe even impossible for you to get a US residency or for you to do rotations in the US. possession of marijuana might be no big deal in Canada but in US the DEA is pretty strict on this sort of stuff. You might have easily screwed yourself for the rest of you life, especially since most canadains do their residency in the US. People lose their medical license for things like this in a second. Just because House can walk around on tv popping vicodin as if they were tick-tacks. doesn't mean the US and the medical society has become more leaneant on their drug policies.

510 points thank you...that takes a big weight off my shoulders...i appreciate the answer..but i hate asking these type of questions because then i get those little smart comments..but i mean everybody makes mistakes you know..some worse then others..i learned from it and i moved on...and that opened my eyes up and made me realize how important it was for me to get into med school
Don't be thanking him yet. if this affects one from becoming a lawyer it will definitely affect you in becoming a doctor because you're known by the government to miss use illegal substances and as a doc you'll have access to many substances with a very high potential for abuse. You might be able to get into med school but you might not be able to get a residency, in which case what's the point of going to med school if you can't practice medicine. I think this is pretty serious. and before today spawn used to use this forum to screw around on so i don't know how trustworthy he might be. Now that this is on your record everyone will know about it, the school, the hospitals you do your rotations in, the places you apply for residency. This can't be erased.
510 points well im thinking that because lawyers have something to do with legal issues and being that your more tied into the government they check...but as for me...i dont even graduate college till im 21...in a sophmore and 19....and then if i do spend 2 years on the island...thats another 2 years...so thats another 4 years total....but i think i should call the school or ask somewhere
what does time have to do with anything? when they do criminal records they start from when you were 18 and pull everything up. Lawyers don't have every day access to substances that have potential for addiction or can be used to sell on the streets for profit, doctors do. And if you have gotten caught with drugs once, that puts you into the category of someone who has potential to abuse again. so with that i don't know too many schools or hospitals that would want the negative publicity when down the road you get caught writing prescriptions to your friends.
If you're only a sophmore what are you even doing on this forum or why are you even considering applying to this school? You should be focusing on your grades and trying to get into US or Canadian schools, depending on where you're from. Do you really have such low expectations for yourself that you automatically have decided to apply to SGU?
510 points i dont have low expectations...im considering all my options....im applying to the big four..im applying to american schools...d.o. schools...and other schools worldwide...being that this is one of the more active forums this is why i asked the question here...
