    Health Insurance

    Advertisements

    Hello everyone,
Im planning on getting my own health insurance and not the school's, but Im not sure what it should cover. I have checked the school website and it doesnt have anything regarding the insurance requirements. can any one tell me where I can find them ?

also how much does off campus housing typically cost if we share with other students?

Here is the school's health insurance info. Basically, you have to have air-evacuation insurance, and some kind of health insurance. You can get whatever you want (from catastrophic on up). There are no minimum coverage requirements, but you can download the school's health insurance coverage info and see what is covered.

Depending on where you live, off-campus housing can cost $350-750+(US) per month.

Does this mean that it is better to get health insurance from the school?

It depends on the kind of health insurance you can get now. If it's decent/affordable, get it. Then you only need the evacuation plan from the school. If on the other hand, you can't get affordable coverage, you should get the school plan. It's not great, but it is better than nothing. It's always better to have insurance...no matter how young and healthy you are/feel.
Plaque is a figment of the liberal media and the dental industry to scare you into buying useless appliances and pastes. Now, I've read the arguments on both sides, and I haven't found ANY evidence yet to support the need to brush your teeth. Ever.

I think the schools insurance is the cheapest option for medical insurance that's available all year round. but if you wish to only obtain travel insurance, and feel like you don't need/want insurance once you're home this might be a good option. HealthCare Abroad

AVOID the school's health insurance at ALL COSTS! It is absolutely horrible. Their coverage is shoddy, they are impossible to get on the phone and they tend not to cover newer medications!

Plan on getting insurance that DOES NOT include air evacuation b/c the school forces everyone to purchase their plan, regardless of whether you have your own. Check with Blue-Cross/Blue-Shield for individual plans that will suit your needs.

Thanks all for the info. I need insurance just to meet the requirement, so I'm looking for the cheapest plan.

Yeah, the only problem is that the travel insurance only covers you outside the country. If you need to get med-evac'ed to the US for care, you won't have any insurance. A friend actually got airlifted to Miami for diagnosis/treatment of a previously undetected heart condition. This is (one of) the reasons for the the health insurance rule, as routine care in the clinic and emergency room care at Grenada General is all free... (Even the "posh" private hospital only charges $120/day for inpatient care, compared to the thousands it would cost in the US.)
