Do most of students at SGU use health insurance provided by the school, underwritten by MEGA. Are their any others? Did anyone have to use their insurance on the island? did you still have to pay out of pocket to get what you want?

I am pretty sure health care on the island is free. The insurance is more of emergency cases when they have to fly you to miami. I went to see a surgeon and got stitches for free on the island. If you have your own insurance right now you don't need to buy the schools insurance, you just need to buy the air evacuation part.
A roommate of mine had to take her husband to the private hospital here and they had to pay upfront and then submit a claim to their insurane back home in the USA. I have TriCare Prime through the military, and that is what I would have to do if I ever needed anything. The clinic on campus is free to students for minor things. Do a search. There was a thread a while back that had some links of insurance companies that might be cheaper than the school's ins.
I went to the general hospital for the stitches and they were free, i also went there a few times after for wound examination and that was free also. The private hospital isn't free, but if you have a minor problem then why pay?
510 points I wouldn't purchase the school insurance - it doesn't cover anything on the island. If you're looking for travel insurance that has air evacuation and are not worried about having medical insurance while you're home in the US for 2-3 months out of the year, check out Wallach & Company, Inc.
It costs about $125 for the term. However, you won't be covered in the US. I've used this and saved $1000 a year!
really? wow thanks a lot.. to be honest the schools health insurance doesn't really cover that much in the US either.. I had to have a precancerous mole removed from my arm and i think it covered like 30% that's after i paid my deductible. also some other docs didn't get paid as well. the school insurance sucks the only reason i bought is because it's the cheapest insurance i could find and insurance is needed for school, otherwise they won't let you attend.
510 points School insurance is such a rip off! I should have posted this sooner. Hopefully more students will read this and save some money. I'm glad to be of some help.
This is a good idea, i bought clico (local caribbean insurance), but this seems even cheaper
Peace out

wow only 30%. I was looking at the things they covered and I got the impression that something as serious as a cancerous mole would be fully covered....just wow. cause this was going to be my primary insurance..so bascially jussianjoe if i got something serious i am screwed.
