SGU matchlist count vs class size?

I recently interviewed and while waiting for response, I was looking through SGU website and got these info:

Class size is 325 each term, so ~650/year

But on their matchlist, I counted (maybe for 2006, not sure) about 356 (give and take few, wasn't being careful).

I also hear some people decel, but if I assume that the number of people that decel is relatively similar each year, class size stays somewhat same throughout the years. And also the number of matches doesn't seem to change that much in my brief comparion in maybe past 3-4 years.

So then where is the other ~40%? Only around ~60% of people actually finish?

it's tru...sgu does take 350 ppl twice a year....and by the time graduation rolls around it's about 350-400 ppl graduating.....the rest of the ppl decel, dropout, pursue the mph or other degree programs, take time off to study for step 1, 2; and some choose not go to thru the match while the others just dont match...and have to wait a year....so it's a weeding out process...only the strong survive...

What do you mean some choose not to go through the match? You can't practice medicine without a residency. So what they get their MD and then they go on to work somewhere else and not as doctors?

some might just want the MD to do research or some might want or need to sit a yr out for whatever obligations, or some can just want the MD and go for another degree such as a JD

yeah but if they're sitting out a year then you should see more people in posted match results in the consecutive year, which you don't. I am not trying to start an argument, i just also find it odd that they only list about 60%. It probably just has to do with people not reporting their match results to the school, and some not getting a match.

yea probably more of the latter, usually you dont get that much MD that gets the degree for the sake of research and not praticing clinical medicine.

I used to work in a toxicology lab at a university medical center. My PI, coincidenally chairman of the department, went to Yale (w/ Gov./Dr. former vt gov/dnc chair btw,) then went to a little med school in the bronx-on M)%%i^ Park--also with the above. He received his MD, went directly to the NIH to do a post-doc and now runs a basic science research program. He is an MD, never did an internship or residency and scored in the top 10% on both parts of boards. Additionally, he never obtained a PhD. I do believe these types of MDs do not account for a large portion of the 40% shortfall you bring to our attention.

    outside the match

What about the people who sign outside of the match? That's literal, right? If a program offers you a spot you can take it and bypass doing the match altogether. This is my understanding at least. I know many people who have completed rotations (mainly medicine) where the PD offered them a contract if they wanted it. I think more IMGs are tempted to take these offers...

    that should affect the numbers
