I wouldn't go so far as to say that SGU is as competitive as US allopathic schools but I think it's moving towards a place that is somewhere in between US schools and the rest of the Caribbean schools. Two years ago when I applied I kept hearing about 1 in four applicants get in with a class of 350 (~1400 applicants) and now it's 1 in 7 with a class of 500 including GSP (~3500 applicants) and the average stats of those accepted are rising also.

right. i just speculate, I am not a numbers guy, but quite a increase in competitiveness in two years. Imagine two years from now. Hopefully the "what? SGU?...caribbean?...oh.." stigma takes a dive with the same slope.

My reason

I was denied the privilege to study medicine in the U.S. SGU is offering me the chance (at a hefty price tag) to receive an MD and practice medicine. Possibly even be a leader in my field, like below, Dr. K. is at a major East coast academic institution. Lot of SGU grads are successful and stories like below are what solidified my decision to attend. Its all about the opportunity... and what I do with it....

Please join us in welcoming Dr. K. as Medical Director, Lupus Patient Care and Translational Research Center.

Dr. K graduated first in his class from St. George’s University School of Medicine, where he was elected to Iota Epsilon Alpha, the International Medical Honor Society. He completed his internal medicine residency and chief residency at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and a clinical rheumatology fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. K. studied the role of IL-15 in a murine model of inflammatory arthritis during his research fellowship at Yale which was supported an ACR/REF Amgen training award and an ACR Physician Scientist Development Award. In addition to his research accomplishments, Dr. K. was named to the Yale New-Haven Hospital All-Star team for his outstanding service and dedication to patient care.

We are extremely fortunate to have recruited Dr. K. to the newly created position of Medical Director for the Lupus Center of Excellence. He will be instrumental in directing the multidisciplinary patient care program, recruiting new faculty and staff to the Center, and training new lupus investigators. He will also join the translational research team focused on discovery and validation of new lupus biomarkers and the Lupus BioGrid, our electronic biomedical informatics system.

My three reasons...

1. Did not get into US MD schools.
2. SGU is (by far) the best alternative for US Students outside of the country
3. Opportunity to travel and see other places

Now, for the real reasons...

1. Beer
2. Hot Lonely Chicks
3. More Beer

No, and I never stated such. I did state that equating rejections at US Med schools with Carib rejections is probably a false dichotomy.

Sincerely,

Jack

Yeah, kind of like saying dental or pharmacy school is just as difficult to get into as a US medical school. Sure there's a similarity in the number of applicants/seat, but the undergrad grades and test scores aren't equal.
