Thinking about applying for Jan 2008

    Hi All,

I just completed my degrees from Northwestern University one quarter early in Neurobiology and Economics. I applied two a couple local Chicago schools for MD but had no luck this year. Instead of doing a master's and taking a year off I am thinking about applying to SGU and some other schools for Jan or March 2008.

I wanted to find out what you guys think my chances are of getting to SGU, my 1st choice. I have a 2.9 GPA overall and science and my MCAT is 31R. I know the GPA is low but my MCAT is decent. How will I fare at SGU, I am fairly certain I won't have problems at the the other schools.

    Thanks

Your MCAT is pretty good but the GPA is fairly low.

However, many students have a lower MCAT (around the 27 range) but higher GPA and get in so your MCAT may make up for it.

I'd say apply cause you prob have a decent chance. Call the school and talk to an admissions counselor.

yeah, i agree. as long as you have some good extracurriculars and good LOR's you should get in. I think a high mcat score is better than a high GPA since how you do on the mcats correlates on how well you do on the USMLE's.

Thanks for all your insight, I did email an admissions counselor who also encourage me to apply.

Also, is it better for me to apply right now for January or wait another month or so, that is to say am I at an advantage by applying earlier on?

No sense in waiting. SGU has rolling admissions. The earlier you apply the better.

Out of curiosity, why would you want to wait?

I don't want to wait really...someone in another forum seemed surprised by me wanting to apply right now for Jan 08. I figured earlier would be better also, learned from that experience in high school when applying for college.

Is it getting a little late to apply for the Aug 07 class? I was just complete as of last week. Does anyone know what percentage of the class is full? Also, are my stats competitive? Overall 3.4, Sci 3.21, 25 MCAT. Good LORS and extra curriculars. Thanks for any help.

You should be fine. with those stats. The school will never tell you that the class is full, they will always take applicants, and either wait list them or just move their application to the next term.
