obviously, "waitlisted spot" at SGU means he got in, but only for a later date, whereas "waitlisted" at a usa school means he is not accepted yet, and may never be accpeted, rather only on the potential list. surely you knew that though, right?

ummm.... it was a JOKE? get it? hellllllooooooo?? though because the aug class is considered to be the more competitive class, waitlist in Jan desn't always guarantee acceptance in Aug. The Jan class isn't as competitive and therefore they will guaranteed spots from those waitlisted in Aug (since the more competitive students are applying in Aug).

back on topic!
with your gpa + ec's you're pretty competitive on the mainland...you should probably consider writing the mcat again, if you score well there then i think you'd be a really strong applicant for a lot of schools close to home (albany, dartmouth, wayne state). it's probably worth you taking the mcat one more time and avoid jumping through all the licensure hoops later one |

hey, thnx
hey, thnx alot for the advice. The only reason that I am reluctatnt to redo the MCAT is that I will have to wait an entire year before I can reapply. Then again, I am not gauranteed I will get in. I really want to do medicine and If I cant get into the US schools this year, I dont know If i want to wait a year to maybe be rejected again. Id rather come to the carribean and aim to perform well on my USMLE's. Im not sure if the logic is roght but would appreciate your opinion. What u think?

Quite a few of my friends were in the same boat as you in their 4th year and they debated about applying to SGU or doing another year and bumping up their mcat mark. 1 went to SGU and likes it (so i applied there because i wasn't even close to the mainland requirements). 2 did a 5th year and spent the summer before working 24/7 on mcat. They both scored 38T and 34S and are currently preparing for interviews at Dartmouth, Wayne State, Albany and NYU. The other thing they found was that their fourth year GPA was pretty good (above 3.7) so as long as their fifth year went well...even if that didn't work they still had UWO/Queens as options the following year when they'd do grad work. So there's two paradigms there. (1) the one guy got in right away and that's great, but him and i both know there's a heck of a lot of licensure problems ahead (see the threads on a canadian citizen getting US residency) but (2) the other guys waited a year and are now pretty competitive applicants in the US which should make their life a LOT easier come residency time. |

Just wanted to add onto my previous post. You might want to contact Josh at the Human Bio Student Union...I think he's the president or vice-president, something like that...either way, if you google it, you'll find him on the site.
Anyways, I e-mailed him regarding SGU being at UT and he confirmed that they'll be at their grad fair on wednesday. I also asked him about the licensure stuff and he seems to know a lot about the Canadian, US and International application system, what parts are the same, what is different, what schools set you up better than others. He mentioned that because they host a med school symposium, he has to know most of the info to answer questions...he might be worth contacting to give you a better idea of your chances. He seems like a pretty nice guy and has a lot of info to offer! |

I know Josh!!!! He thinks very highly of SGU, I think his supervisor used to be a professor there in the 80s and still speaks well of it, so as a result, he does too. He's a good guy though, I've known him since first year when he started with the HBSU, he'll definitely be able to give you some good advice. |

I think the US competition is getting higher as well. I won't even go into Canadian one.. let's just say being an Ontario Res, sucks... I applied to US schools but did not get any reply yet, (MCAT 29M, 3.72 GPA)... but I am thinking of SGU if I do not get in this year. I know i Can redo the MCAT, but like people said, is it worth the extra year? and that still won't gurantee me a spot. Plus, the cost of a US education (since I am a CND citizen) will be just as much as SGU (+/- for some schools). Reading this board daily, I do understand the "problems" that could potentially pop up, but as of now, the do not seem as bad as "waisting" another year.. Sure I can do Masters and all that, and I've known people who did that, but that takes 2+ years sometimes... anyways, I just think SGU may be a good choice if people do not want to wait... just my 2cents..

Thnx
Hey guys,
Again, thnx alot for all the help. I am kind of in the same train of thought as alexshrip here. I am not sure if taking a year off is worth it when I am not garuanteed getting in the next time. It would absolutely disheartening if that were to happen. I will wait and see what happens with the US schools and if by some way I manage to pull it off great. If not, Im seriously looking into SGU, and wont mind coming to the unoversity. Who knows, maye Il apply after my first year at SGU, but if so would probably only be to canadian schools, that way the cost works out the same in the end. What ya think alexshrip n everyne else? |
