update on wireless in all dorm rooms

08/25/2006
Upon a directive from the Chancellor last May, the IT staff has been working diligently to bring Internet access to all dorm rooms on the True Blue campus.

In order to affect the largest number of students as quickly as possible, the Superdorms 1 & 3 were chosen as the first to be "lit up" and we expect this to happen shortly (hopefully within a few days.) When we know for sure when this will occur, we will post a notice on the Members' Center.

The next locations will be Superdorms 2 & 4, but this will take a few more weeks.

While we've been working on the Superdorms we have also been planning our approach to "lighting up" all of the "letter" dorms, E - Z.

We will start with Building Z since it is already connected to the SGU network. We hope to utilize wireless technology in that location since most of the interior walls are sheet rock and thus allow for radio signal penetration (an absolute requirement for a wireless network.)

The rest of the "letter" dorms are nearly 10 years old and were never designed for either wired or wireless networks. None of them are connected to the SGU network at this time. We are working with a cable installation contractor to determine the best way of connecting each of these buildings and hope to have an answer soon. In the interim we will be doing site surveys of each of the buildings to determine whether or not wireless networking will be an appropriate solution.

Please be assured that we are doing everything possible to bring Internet access to all dorms as quickly as possible.

We will keep you informed as developments occur by posting notices on the Members' Center.

Thanks for your patience.

I am in SD 3 now and I haven't seen anyone working on anything down here. How do they plan on getting wireless running in this building with in the next couple of days when they have done nothing. And it's not like they can simply add more routers to SD3 since there was never anywireless in this building to begin with, (because we don't have a study lounge). I say it will take a few months before this happens.

it doesnt make any sense...
if they want to affect the most students, they should do sd1 and sd2 first. why sd3? last time i checked, sd3 wasnt even 100% occupied
i dont get their reasoning at all

Why did it take a directive from the big man to finally get this going after so many years? Where's the apology for waiting so long?

Internet in SD!

I live in SD1 and we have had IT people working here last week, over the weekend and again today. The internet in SD1 will be via ethernet ports that are already installed in all the rooms, and there are switches installed in the closets in each of the laundry rooms. I spoke to one of the IT guys working in SD1 today and he said we'll have internet here by Friday. So, I'll be keepin' my fingers crossed......

Folks, when i lived in SD1 there were IT guys putting in ethernet/fiberoptic lines above the ceiling tiles. And how did the ever fix the problem of the closets in the laundry rooms not being air conditioned?
