I had read a number of posts with students complaining about the lack of internet access in their rooms...seems that SGU is addressing the problem even though it took a directive from the Chancellor. Must be great to finally have the wireless conections. Can't imagine not having an internet connection in your room.

It looks like they left dorms R, S, and T off of the latest update, so it looks like we're getting internet last.

i had lunch with certain someone up there in the SOM administration and he told me apparently the complaints made by the students last term while chancellor M was here, were basically the lack of internet in the dorms. this was basically what brought chancellor M to decide to install internets in the dorm rooms and he doest care how much it will cost, he just wants it done. chancellor M will be coming down to gnd around the 19th of this month , and he expects the IT to have SD1 to be fully wired, as SD1 will be the prototype. i joked with the high place admin. staff and said that by the time the IT can wired up the letter bldgs, this term will be over, and he replied that i shouldnt be worry and all should be done by midterm time, as chancellorM is really pushing forward with this and said "this should have already been done yesterday, not today or tomorrow"
so i guess we will? |

I spoke with people in the IT department a while back and asked why the dorms weren't hooked up to the internet, their answer was: The whole island doesn't have enough bandwidth needed to wire the campus (which is very likely since the only thing offered on the island is DSL and DSL has limited bandwidth.) I haven't seen any major upgrades to the internet in the library or the lecture halls. Once the dorms get hooked up, the internet will be slower than 56k, simply because everyone will have their computers on 24/7 and will be downloading. The school is simply splitting the lines they already have to provide internet to the dorms. Unless the school bumps up it's internet speeds the internet will be very slow. So having internet in the dorms isn't necissarily a good thing. I would rather have fast internet in the library and other public study spaces, instead of having something slower than dail up in my room and everywhere else on campus. At best I say the supre dorms will get hooked up sometime this term, and every other dorm won't get hooked up till atleast next term.
