Cost of ac?

What is the difference in cost between an apartment with ac and one without ac? I was thinking if the cost difference is over $100/month, I should bring my own portable ac since I would be on the island for two years. I believe the total cost including shipping should be around $700-800. Well, unless our rent also covers the cost of electricity for the ac. Is it easy to have things shipped to Grenada? I lived in Ecuador for eight years, and it was a nightmare to have thing shipped to you. You have to bribe them to get you stuff out, and your stuff would get stolen all the time.

rent usually does not cover electricity.
and running AC would be well over 100/month! but that also how you run it.
all apts here come with an ac, its useless to ship one down. dont bother.

ONly 100US a month... HA I have known a few people to pay their rent and then half again for AC. Its cheaper to get a fan....or learn to live with the heat

It's been as high as 350us per month for a place with (broken) central ac. That should be the first question you ask a landlord...give me a rough estimate of the electric bill if I run a/c for most of the day. If you don't it will come back to haunt you.

A reasonable solution is to get a fan or two and cycle the a/c.

I've been living in a studio with working AC since term 2 and here's how the AC costs break down:

1)Run it all the time that you're there ~ $185 - $220/mo
2)Run it during day and turn it off before bed ~ $129 - $166/mo
3)Run it for about 6 hours and turn it off before bed ~ $92 - $125/mo

I wised up for 3rd+4th term:

4)Just got rid of the AC and bought a big fan that I run 24/7. Also, turned off my refrig and ate on campus, only turning on frig during weekends; small bit of A/C here and there. ~ $61-$66/mo

Prices will be lower for a 2 bedroom, and it all fluctuates. Option 4 is not for everyone, but it's easier during the wet season and cooler months. Basically I'd strip down to boxers and put a huge fan on me while I studied. You get used to it after awhile. I'd just study in the library on the really hot days. #4 will save you tons of cash.

So, technically you can save money off campus and I definitely did during 3rd and 4th term, but if I had it to do all over again, I'd probably just live on campus. I was 30 when I entered and had been living on my own for 14 yrs; without roommates for 6, so I was wary of putting up with all the b.s. of being on campus in a suite situation, but honestly you deal with just as much b.s. off campus. It's easier and safer to store stuff during the breaks, but that's about it. Like someone said, if you live on campus the A/C is included.

I understand the cost of electricity depends on how often your ac is on. My question is what is difference in rents between an apartment with ac and one without ac? If you live on-campus do we have our own room, and do we have to move out during breaks?

Damn you're cheap B!

Is that the only way you can afford that new gfx card? lol

But hey, whatever it takes. Like I said in another thread, a fan works marvellously. Of course, my dad picks up my AC tab (love being at home) and he's always telling me to put on the AC when I'm studying in my room, but no sense in doing so when I'm not at all uncomfortable with a fan. And I'm talking about a 12" desk fan too rather than one of those giant standing tornadoes you can buy.

Oh yeah, it's worth mentioning that I HATE being hot. I get very irritable and annoyed so it's not like I'm one of those weird people like my mother who huddles under a blanket when the rest of us are sweating.

first all apt HAVE ac, its up to you to use it. the difference in rent, see the post by groove.

as a first termer, you will share a room with someone else and yes you have to move out during break. and yes there is storage on campus. and yes as an upper termer you can enter the housing lottery system to get a single.
