Competitive Matches

i was looking at the match list for 06 and was delighted to see matches by SGU into derm, ophtho, ent, and rads.

can anyone comments on the students that matched into ophtho/derm/ent? were these people exceptional students i.e. 4.0 with a 260 and multiple pubs? or did they have inside connex i.e. uncle was the PD at the place?

any info is helpful!

I think grades and good board scores from these people are a given.

For the derm person, this person was profiled in sgu newsletter a little while back. apparently this person did a pre-residency fellowship first.

I talked with one of the ophtho guys and he was an ophthlamic tech for about 6 six and published a manual for ophtho techs. He also got some great letters of rec from big wigs.

As you can see, these people had something extra in their application which separated themselves from the pack, not just great scores/gpa. If you want to get into these specialties, you'll probably need to do something extra like pre-residency fellowships, research, etc to show your dedication. Like anything else in life, it's also a bit of a game so youll have to know who the big players are and be sure to get great letters of ref from these pool of ppl.

yes - pre-residency fellowships usually involve a year of research. This is done right after graduation and is generally done if u dont match and want to get into the competitive residency and show your dedication.

nyeei was ent, not ophtho.
two opthos matched at usf and drexel.
