SGU Grads: Where are you now?
Well I'm basically contemplating the leap to a Caribbean Medical School. I know it's not an easy process, but as Canadian, I'm scared that the doors open will be very scarce, and the risk might be to great.
So I was just wondering SGU Grads, where are you now? What kind of opportunities are there for fellowships, research, consulting, policy/gov't work, international health, organization involvement (eg. doctors without borders)? What kinds of things did you do to set yourself apart as an IMG to land prestigious residencies etc.? |

Not an SGU grad, but of those I've met through interviewing, initial contacts, and open houses:
One guy practicing in internal medicine in San Jose, California. One OB/GYN in Oakland, CA. One guy with his own practice (don't know what specialty) in San Francisco, CA. One guy finishing up a nice residency in emergency medicine somewhere in the Bay Area; one woman finishing her last year of residency (and she's an older student; graduated in her 40s) doing internal medicine in Oakland, CA. Don't know anything about how those going to Canada do, since I live in CA, but from whom I've met and through the general grapevine (everyone seems to have a friend of a friend that's an IMG), California, which tends to be difficult to get into, is crawling with em. |

Seriously great stories, indeed! Go to SGU's website. According to them, Yale's head of Cardiothoracic surgery is an SGU grad. Nifty story to read. . .
Congrats to you all, no matter where you did your residency! I have humble aspirations to soon follow your footsteps! TheTallGuy |

After residency (in central/northern California), I went into private practice first and helped set up a Department of Hospital Medicine in a large multispecialty medical group as one of the first hospitalist-intensivists in the group.
Last year, I was recruited to join a fairly large US medical school as a full time faculty/academic hospitalist, with an appointment of Assistant Professor of Medicine. I also currently hold a liason federal medical officer appointment in one of the alphabet agencies under Dept. of Homeland Security (as a representative from the med school) Sorry, I choose not to be any more specific in a public forum... folks who know me outside of here knows who/where I am.
