Warning: your laptop power brick is NOT a surge protector

I thought that was common knowledge but was surprised to learn that apparently some people think it is. All that it is is a power supply/transformer.

Just bought a new laptop and was talking with a guy in my class that has one cause I wanted to check it out to see if the plug for my own would fit the model he has. The girl sitting next to him overheard and commented that she thought that the power brick has surge protection built in. While researching a surge protector for myself on the web, I saw someone else commenting the same.

It is not. Please do yourself a favour and spend $10-20 when you go home to buy one to protect your $1000+ investment. Power down here is notoriously fickle. Often times I sit in this room I am now and my ceiling fan will slow down with the surges. Hell, my computer screen flashed the other day when the power dropped (it's on a surge protector though) low.

And just to reinforce this point, a friend of mine got his laptop fried last week and now is without a laptop for school and has to buy a new one so is also out of that cash. Not sure if such an act would be covered by warranty unless you have something like Complete Care from Dell or a similar plan.

As I said, I was very surprised to even learn that there's one. Figured everyone knew that but guess some people just aren't "tech savvy".

it's believable. and most girls' computers are in terrible shape software wise too..........they were always having problems with viruses, programs crashing, blue screens and just didn't care.

many people with computers don't care about the details as long as it works.

Sorry, but it's not just girls's computers. Many guys' own as well although I guess there's some truth to it because guys are more likely to be into technology than women. However, that's not always the case.

I do wonder how some folks have their computers in such bad shape though. My 4+ year old laptop runs better than many new (less than 1 year) machines my friends have but I'd also consider myself a fairly advanced user since computers/hardware/software are a bit of a hobby.

I'm proud of my geekness and I bore my girlfriend no end with talking about it to her. Gotta love her though for tolerating it cause she's knows it's something I'm into. At the same time, gotta give me a kick in the ***** for knowing she doesn't really care yet continuing to do so.

The thing is that they should care about something like this because chances are your computer could end up fried and it's only a few dollars to get a portable surge protector. Obviously it'd be a pain to lug around a 6-outlet one but I just bought a foldable 2-outlet one for around $8 US. That's with 10% off and free shipping cause I bought something else that qualified but even without that, the price would have been $15.

Now, obviously a lot of people never have it happen and I'm happy for that but I'd rather spend $20 and be safe vs $2k which is a common price I see quoted for laptops being sold on SGU Post.

where did u buy the portable surge protector?? i have also heard of a lot of people's hard drives crashing and i think it's power relatated. although my power supply in my room is probably protected better than the computers at the pentagon, when i am in histo/path lab i am sad to say i don't have a portable surge protector.

Belkin has one that I got from the Dell site. It's also available on Amazon here. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8

As for more, since we don't discriminate here:

APC
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8

Tripplite
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ance&n=1064954

Cyberpower (for those with pronged connections to their laptops)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1051826232713

Belkin yet again

Since were on this topic, do you guys really use "transformers" in your dorm/apt/house room? Or do you just use those cheapo converters for all your electrical stuff (i.e. desk lamp, computer strip outlet, etc.)? I read the "things to bring" post and others, and the welcome packet suggests buying a transformer. Do all of you really have one?
THank you very much,

The Belkin in the first link that hetal posted is the one I got.

If you want to comparison shop, here you go
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g.../search=F9H220

I got my own from Buy.com because I had 10% off and free shipping. So it ended up being like $10 flat. Compare that with the $13 + approx $8 shipping that Dell was charging me when I bought my laptop the other day.

The reason I got the Belkin over the APC which is what I was originally looking at is the fact that it has 2 outlets (just in case) and it's a 3-pronged plug. Be careful of that as I almost didn't realize when looking at an APC model (to follow) since the product picture doesn't show it very well. The most common APC model I was turning up is this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=172282 and the plug is only 2.

The one in hetal's second link would work though but look at your computer's connector to see what kind of plug it has.
