just to be safe:

I am living on campus, new student, so...1) do i need a transformer
2) do i need a surge protector?

what does a surge protector do and are there certain types for certain thing or is it pretty universal?

Sorry, computers/electronics are not my thing. Thanks

If you're living in one of the superdorms (which almost all first-term students do) then you will not need a transformer but it would still be a very good idea to have a surge protector. You also may find an extension cord to be useful.

surge protector does what its name says, it protects your electronics from surges/spikes of electricity which will usually fry the electronics if the surge reaches it. the surge protector prevents that from happening. i would invest a good surge protector, not those $9.99 ones you can get from the local hardware store
