Any suggestion on places to stay from Jan 6 to Jan 12?

Hi,

The only flight available on AA is departing on Jan 5. I booked the flight and I will get to Grenada on Jan 6. I need to find a place to stay for 7 nights before the dorm opens. The hotels are quite expensive, the cheapest I found is $50 w/o air conditioning.

I was wondering if someone knows of a better deal. Is there anyone interested in letting me stay with them for 7 nights? I will be glad to pay.

Any suggestion is greately appreciated.

Thanks,
=) Martin

Why don't you change your flight?

Instead of spending the money to stay an extra week in Grenada, which you'll see plenty during your time on the island--> why don't you fly to Barbados or antigua or trinidad when school starts and get a local carib flight to Grenada. Everytime AA tells me they are fully booked, I just book a flight from CA to barbados (American airlines) and a local carrier (carib star or liat) Barbados to ST. george's.
The local flight is usually 40 minutes long and only costs like 50$ US one way.

Martin...

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!! How the Hell you're going to get everything done in the next week, I don't know. But I can only hope that the school makes concessions for their late "invitees".

Second, I know of a really good landlord that, as of a few weeks ago, had one apartment available for January only. Not only have I received recommendations on this person, but I've spoken to him personally a number of times, and he's a really nice guy! I don't know if the place is still available, but I'd contact him NOW!!! I'm sure he'd work you a deal better than the hotels (he seems more than willing to help us SGU students out).

His name is Rawle Charles.
Phone: (473) 444 - 4193
Cell: (473) 407 - 1097

Third, you obviously won't get to visit the island before matriculating. That's too bad... Not that I'm trying to freak you out or anything, but being able to visit the island ahead of time was nothing short of invaluable! If you have any questions... any at all.. please don't hesitate to PM me. I'll give you any info/advice I can!

Fourth, you're getting there a lot earlier than the rest of us, but... a lot of us are arriving on the isalnd on the 12th (before the majority of students), and we're getting together on the night of the 13th. (Check out the thread entitled "Jan. '04 First Termers... Let's Get Together", or something like that.)

Good luck to you with getting everything together so quickly!!!

...Cal

How kind of price did you get?

Berkeleyboy,

Thanks for your advice. When did you book your flight? What price did you pay for it?

The best price I found is $1485.
Roundtrip SJC --> BGI (on AA, Jan 12 and May 21): $1255
Roundtrip BGI --> GND (on Carib Star): $230

What kind of strategy did you use?

Cal...
Thanks for your information about Mr Charles. It is a wonderful resource.

I can use a few more days preparing and resting at home, so I will try to find a better flight date.

ouch!

Martin, I'm not sure how much fares are from CA, but this seems like a bit much.
When I took the tour in November my whole package Denver to Grenada INCLUDING 3 nights hotel stay was $1067.

Are you booking thru MSW Travel or on your own?

an option

Well dorms open up Jan 9th, im not 100% sure about that. I'm going to be an RA in Super Dorm #2. Umm your best bet is to call housing at Bayshore or call housing in grenada and talk to Wendy and tell them your situation. Us RA's have to be there Jan 7th and there is no way im staying in a hotel. Im going to stay in my room. Worse comes to worse, just find out where you'll be dorming. Fly down to grenada and take your own cab to campus and then ask campus security to let you into your room and then go to the housing office and pick up ur key.

I actually book thru a travel agent

I was in a similar situation when I needed to get back to the US from Grenada in a matter of a couple weeks (emergency). Expedia and travelocity were giving me ridiculous prices like 1500$ round trip so I booked thru a travel agent locally and she found me roundtrip from GND --> Barbados on liat --> 100$
and Barbados --> miami --> LAX (AA)
for 1040$
not bad for 2 weeks notice.
good luck buddy!
