Studying at St Georges University of London at the University of Nicosia (Cyprus)

    Hi All,

I'm sure there are some of you that are thinking about applying to medical school, and are trying to weigh up where you'd like to go, how you'd like to study, what your future prospects are, so I thought i'd give you some information on where i'm studying medicine - hopefully it'll be of some help to you!

As the title suggests, I am studying in Cyprus (within the EU), on the St Georges University of LONDON MBBS4 course. It has already been approved by the GMC, and I will graduate as a student of St Georges University of LONDON, with a UK Primary qualification that grants me access to the UK foundation program. Put simply, I get the exact same qualification as St Georges in London students, but I get to study in sunny Cyprus!

Just to reiterate the fact that we're both doing the same course; our term dates, lectures, timetables, and even our exam times are the same (although being 2 hours ahead of UK, we get to do our exams at 11am instead of first thing at 9am!) This is just one of the small perks we have here in Cyprus. Others that I can think of off the top of my head would be: All the facilities here are brand new, the University of Nicosia have purposefully built the entire medical school to fit with the current St Georges University of London course, there are not 100's of students wanting to use the same equipment, we're taught our clinical skills by some of the best doctors in their field (as supposed to being taught by 4th year medical students in London), not to mention everyone here is so friendly and supportive! I haven't come across a single staff member that doesn't want us to succeed!

Studying here in Cyprus has been great so far. It's been really intense (as to be expected from a graduate entry medical degree that takes 4 years instead of 5/6!) but it has been so interesting and exciting! Getting to examine my first patient in the 2nd week of starting was a fantastic hands-on experience!! Problem Based Learning (PBL) is really fun too! The country itself is nice, it's a mediterranean island after all! People here are so laid back (which i guess could be good and bad). Getting around the place is much easier if you have a car, for example, to some of the hospital placements that we have, but it's pretty simple to buy a car here in Cyprus if you feel you need one. All in all though, it's been a wonderful experience so far, and it's an amazing feeling to be studying something i'm so passionate about!!

If you would like any more information, you can visit the website or email the admissions office.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Tipton,
Thank you for replying. Where do I apply ? Also I couldn't help noticing that your location is SGUL. I am a current student at SGUL, would it be possible to set up a meeting with you at SGUL ?

My pleasure. I'm in New York City and our other staff are mostly in Cyprus.

I'll see if any of the staff in London are available to meet with prospective students.

The application is through our website: St George's Medical Degree in Cyprus

    Hi Tipton,
I have registered on the website, but the programme option it gives me is for the fall of 2013 entry only. I am not sure what exactly to do for this. Also do you know when the last date for 2012 applications are ?

    Hello Tipton,
Thank you for all your help. Since I am a student at SGUL, I have asked around about the 4yr course in Cyprus. A lot of the current medical students and some of the lecturers have told me that this degree is not accredited by the GMC. Is this true?

    Completely untrue.

In the GMC's most recent (10 days ago) Quality Assurance of Basic Medical Education (QABME) visit they were highly impressed by our Clinical Affiliation relationship with Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, student support mechanisms and infrastructure at the University of Nicosia among many other aspects of our students' experience. In fact to quote the QABME Panel Chair, "As a new Medical School, you are well ahead of the curve."

I suppose it may be possible that London staff at SGUL are unaware of this process since it takes place in Cyprus.

    White Coat Ceremony

Does this school participate in the white coat tradition?
