Atlanta Clinicals

Hi everyone,

I am starting my 6 week psychiatry rotation next week in North Carolina. Before it ends in June I need to figure out where else I will be doing clinicals.
I'm leaning towards Atlanta clinicals since I can live there for 2 years and complete everything instead of moving to a different city for each rotation.
So I was hoping to get some info and opinions about the Atlanta clinicals.
How did you find your housing? What is rent like? What hospitals do you work in? How long is the commute to the hospital? What area of Atlanta do you live in. How do you like the experience so far? Any info at all would help. Thanks!

I found housing in Atlanta through promove.com. I highly suggest living within the city so you are not fighting traffic in the mornings.

There are various sites for rotations throughout Atlanta and its surrounding area. Commutes can vary from 15-45 min depending on where you live. There are also opportunities for IM and Surgery in Rome, GA and you may want to consider that before actually going to Atlanta. There is affordable housing at that location as well. From what I understand, Rome offers more inpatient experience that can be sometimes difficult to get in Atlanta.

The doctors you rotate with will be affiliated with several hospitals in the area. GMC is also in the process of trying to secure more physicians and hospitals in the area. I personally was at Emory Crawford Long, South Fulton Medical Center, Dekalb Medical Center, and Kennestone Hospital. I was also in Atlanta Medical Center for a short period before the contract was discontinued.

I think all our clinical students are too busy working to be on ValueMD but here is what I know about greenbook rotations:

most of the states which require greenbook rotations (california, texas, Florida and new york) are not elligible for licensure after graduating from SESOM.

However, that still leaves 46 other states which you can practice in. All you have to do is contact your state board of health and ask about licensure requirements for physicians.

I personally believe that is why the USMLE was created. It was designed so that if you can pass that you should be able to practice in any state in the US. For some reason, the other states jsut don't get that.

Besides that, I would much rather take a non competitive (one on one with attending physician) rotation than a greenbook rotation anyday. I have worked in many aspects of medicine and seen the groups of greenbook clinical rotation students following around a preceptor with clipboards learning things second hand...definitely NOT my favorite way to learn things.

hmm

I think SEUSOM graduates can be licenced in New York after residency training. I think Florida may be the same as well. Pennsylvania has similar rules and there are graduates in training there now. I could be wrong.
BTW, I think Texas is a case by case basis.
If you can't get a licence in certain state I would bet to say the job market there is poor for physicians anyway (e.g. California - low pay + high cost of living) Good luck

BTW, move around! Much better training that way.

MA,PA and VA are "greenbook" states as well.(I believe there are about 19 "greenbook" states in total) You can get licensed in NY, you just can't get your first permanent license there. (This means that you may be able to do residency there if you're not required to have a permanent license during your training) Reciprocity can be used for many states except for those that use the CA list. There's a few more strange rules out there but I don't remember them all right now.

Any international medical students at South Fulton Hospital? I'm one of the hospitalists there, and I'm an attending for the Morehouse FP residents. I also work at Wellstar (Kennestone Hospital in Marietta) part-time. I graduated from Ross.

There might be. There are students who follow an ENT and a few others over there.
