Advice needed for USMLE 1

Hey

I needed some input from ppl abt preparing for the Boards. I'm currently attending the Kaplan 6 week program and so far it's pretty helpful. All the stuff that we've been taught in Statia matches up with what Kaplan is teaching (so that is good). But as far as preparing on my own goes.... that's where I'm confused
I guess I feel overwhelmed with all the info from our classes (term 1-5) and the short amt of time before the boards.

Any advice from ppl who've given their USMLE step 1 would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Do lots and lots of qbank... if you get done with Kaplan and still have time before your step1, this is how I did it... I would spend from 8am to 4pm reviewing and memorizing the Kaplan material that I highlighted and considered high yield/I didnt know yet. Then I took an hour break and spent 5pm to 9:30pm doin just QBANK. The qbank questions are about the same level of difficulty as the real Step1. I will also say that almost every question on Step1 has its answer somewhere in the Kaplan material, so if you learn the books well, and you can apply the material on the exam, you will do just fine! Good luck!

how about brs books?

are brs books useful? each book is 400 pages and seems too detailed
and may overall be counterproductive i think considering the the
short time period you have.

its important to focus on the material most likely to appear on step 1.

BRS books being review books are actually not that detailed. And since they are designed as board review books, they cover the material on step 1 fairly well. However, I will tell you, that they don't cover everything and sometimes it is necessary to actually sit down and read textbooks.

I've read and absorbed a whole lot more than that in 15 weeks time. You just need to schedule your time wisely and have the determination to get through it.

volume of material

I think it was Dr. Lucia that said medical was like memorizing a phone book in another language and then being asked to recall the names and numbers! Yes, you can review and absorb that much material. Thats what Organic Chemistry and the MCAT test for....recall.

Good Luck
