6 Year Medical Program

Well, I have been sitting on the fence for sometime regarding the comments made about the "pre-med" program and well, here is my rant:

First, and especially, and I will use the word loosely. For the "promoters" of StChris on this website it is high time that we ALL get on board with the school's administration and call the program for what it is, a 6 Year Medical Program. Every time I look at my school's ID it says, "medical student", nothing else and nothing more. In fact, it is the same card that is issued to all medical students at StChris. Students like me and those ** students have the same guarantee for successful completion. That is maintaining a 70% pass average. We are already in the "program". Yes, it is true we take general science/math courses (premed), but we will also complete courses in Medical Terminology, History of Medicine, Introduction to Microbiology and Immunology, Human Anatomy and Physiology (Not Gross Anatomy- that is in Basic Science), Introduction to Neuroscience, Medical Sociology, Human Anatomy and Physiology II, Psychology, and Statistics. Plus, we will undertake 3 English courses that will certainly benefit the TOEFL exam component of the USMLE. And yes, all this in 6 semesters. Then will come the basic science component, and considering the above, I would suggest well prepared for such.

Second, for all those who take issue with the US vs. Them (Preemies vs. BSers) fora including unfortunately some on the SGA. This will serve nothing more than alienation if this idea is continued. My experience to date on this has included some, certainly not all, but by fellow students none-the-less an elitist position. Maybe some see this as a rite of passage to feel superior, but truly we are all walking in many shoes, so may I suggest respect in this manner. Remember we are only as smart as the last thing we have learned, and we tend to forget that which became before it.

Thirdly, for any student wanting the MedAchiever Loan the school must certify you as a graduate student. This includes the 6 Year Medical Program. So, in short, the 6 Year Medical Program is not an undergraduate program, it is as described. Of course there comes certain advantages with this, but also limitations if one wanted to transfer prior to completion, which is similar to many other schools.

Fourthly, once completed, the components of the 6 Year Medical Program earns both a Bachelor's of Health Science Degree, and a M.D. Degree. And most importantly, be licensable in the same states as the 4 Year Medical Program graduates of StChris.

Finally, I am not discounting the advice of MTT, BTS, and others about choosing a particular school over another and the caution that is warranted. One must do their homework. However, no one school is for everyone, so my advice like MTT, BTS, and others that have suggested prior: If you are already successfully undertaking an undergraduate degree premed program, then wait. The 4 Year Program will fit you well, when and if. It will also become more competitive as the years pass. However, if you don't fit the undergrad model then the 6 Year Medical Program is very viable, and currently very successful.

Note: Feel free to PM me on matters not addressed regarding the above. Unfortunately, there simply has not been an accurate view on this forum regarding the 6 Year Medical Program. I am positive this will change.

Sincerely,

your post is well thought out

and shows great maturity. It is a natural thing for some of us to look at the 6 yr program as perhaps inferior or as merely pre-med, whatever else we can name it.

However, it is because the emphasis in the States follows a different criteria. Most of us in the 4 yr have already followed that followed by the MCAT, et al. So our inclination is to look at the 6 yr from a different perspective.

Yours comes from a different POV, and it is equally as valid.

All the best.

6Yr Med program

I was wondering about acceptance into that program.

I'm an AA grad in Nursing with 14yrs exp. I have a lot of volunteer hours and I'm currently a Hospice RN.

What chances would I have in possibly getting into the program?

My GPA is not real high from 15 years ago.

Bill.

Hmmm awesome. I can appreciate everything you've said so far. The only things is that the TOEFL isn't part of the USMLE and is NOT required any MORE for ECFMG Certification. This rule/law or w/e you want to call it has been changed. Now it's been incorporated into the Step 2 CS (formally known as the CSA) which will test the students the ability to perform H&P and workup diagnostic procedures (Same things as the CSA the only that's changed is the name) and will test the students ability to communicate in the English language while interviewing the SP (Standardized Patients) etc etc.

Other than that, you've nailed it right in the head. I don't think anyone has actually talked about the 6 Year MD Program. The program is very reputable and is has been very successful to date.

Take Care

GOD BLESS [/quote]
