Students stealing library books alredy!

I heard from a friend at St chris that some of the students are already stealing the library books (from a grand total of slightly over 100 books for the entire student body), so the school is threatening to close down the libray or have the entire student body be responsible for the books! Shouldn't the school have enough security measure so that such occurrences would not happen? Maybe that gives the school a reason to close down the library for good. I heard that there's still no librarian to oversee the libray functions, nor any subscription to the medical journals when the students have to write a 3000 to 5000 word research paper for their courses! There's no copy machine, nor any printer yet, either. What a pity.Even a third world Carib schools I had visited had these minimum services! And St chris is in Uk and they can't even provide that? What a shame....

I heard a similar rumour, that students are stealing books. What a shame. There are security measures in the books and even someone hired as a librarian who is in the library at all times and people still sneak and steal books. Its a shame when adults don't have a minimum level of respect for their fellow students who may need to use them.

BTS, reading the library thing makes one wonder how can you claim to be equivalent to a US medical school. Is there any school iin the US that has 100 books in its library and no professional trained librarian?

Well, AZskeptic,

The issue being discussed is a facility issue rather than a quality of education issue. Students still have access to the Univ of Luton library as well as the Luton and London public libraries. Also, I have been to the Emory Univ medical library and in all, there are probably around 3-4000 books. However, in all that, there are probably only 300-500 books that are of any real use. The rest are all older, out of date, out of print, books kept around for reference and nostalgia.

That being said, I do think that the school has more work to do on the library. I think that what has been done so far is a great first step and I am very hopeful that more will come. There should be free access to medical reference websites on all computers and if there is not, that should be a relatively easy thing for the students to lobby the admin for and a fairly easy problem to remedy. This could also easily be expanded to journals since if you have online access to them , there is no need to stack paper copies of them all over.

In the past 6 months, from what I hear, the school has made great strides in improving the facilities at st chris incuding the additions of dry labs, library at all, dedicated study areas besides the classrooms, much bigger computer lab, construction on wet labs, acuisition of two new buildings, bigger comfortable student lounge and kitchen, etc, etc. Change does not happen overnight, but in small steps over periods of time.

"UK" medical school.

This must be another humiliating display of how "english" this school is.

Hahaha studnets stealing books from the library. I bet the GMC is very happy to hear about this. Soon enough this experiment should move out of UK domain and go to the tax-heaven where the school is chartered and stop bending every rule available.

Its sort of like a multiple question test...if there are only 100 books you have a good chance of getting a good one.....but on the other hand it would seem that the shelves would be pretty empty and it would stand out quickly.

all kidding aside, it must be inconvenient to have to go outside the school to get materials/research items. If you have your own laptop you can get most, but not all I would suppose.

Librarian to fleeing SC student: "Son, where is the anatomy book you were reading?"

SC student "It's in the bag---my bookbag"
One good thing with having such a small library is that the librarian will notice immediately if the book on the shelf is missing or not..

Theft of books in the St Chris library can only happen a few times, and then it's nothing more to steal
