Thread: Spartan Licensed in Texas?

Im very interested in Spartan, but i'm unsure if I'd be able to practice in Texas. I've read posts that contradict each other, and basically have me running around trying to figure out if Spartan grads can get licensed in TX. I've just read, 'banned', 'might be approved', license only if...' blah blah...lots of people bash every school on here...prolly dont have anything better to do and probably post innacurate stuff, but then I read what Spartan grads post and they're doing well, so i dont know what to believe. Anyway..I found this: "Schools from which the board has licensed: "30601 ST LUCIA HEALTH SCI UNIV (FORMERLY SPARTAN UNIV), CASTRIES"

Its the other way around, St. Lucia School of medicine was the former name and now it is Spartan health sciences...

I have spartan freinds whom are currently doing their residencies in Texas and I know current licensed grads. The professor, a visitor to this forum is Texas licensed..

A while back, I called the Texas state licensing boards myself and I asked them if spartan grads can be licensed in Texas. I understand what you are saying, because it was very hard to get a straight answer from them. On the other hand, Spartan's Nobel prize invitee did his fellowship in Texas at MD Anderson.. -s&a

Yeah, I dont understand how Texas gives the caribbean students a hard time. If they pass USMLE1,2 clinicals etc., IMG's should be considered competent, shouldn't they? Texas has licensed IMG's from many developing countries, who most probably didn't do their clinicals in US.

You are right and the same is true for california... It isn't fair at all... Oklahoma tried to do the same thing and the state boards were sued and it went to the state supreme court and the supreme court found this kind of prejudism unconstitutional!!! The OK state boards learned their lesson.

You might be able to get licensed in Texas if you go to Spartan, but make sure you read TSBME rules for licensure at:

Keep in mind licensure rules can change every 6 months or so.

You'd want to make sure you do a family practice clinical rotation, as well as one in neurology. You can't do any clinicals in Texas and then get licensed unless you are registered as a visiting student at a Texas medical school when you do the clinicals. All clinicals must be ACGME clinicals in the department you do your clinical.

It would probably be wise to retain an attorney experienced in Texas licensure matters when applying for licensure in Texas, as Texas deals with IMGs on a case-by-case basis and even Ross and SGU students have troubles sometimes with Texas.

Texas is very xenophobic when it comes to caribbean grads in particular, so you have to dot every i and cross every t when it comes to applying for licensure there. They can, and will, deny you licensure just because they don't like you and cite your medical school being rejected for licensure back in 1970 as the excuse.

I am not sure about sparta but i know for ross grads you can do a resideny in texas you just wont be liscenced there after the residency is over. So you can work your *** off as a resident but after that you are not good enough to continue to work for them.

Yes, this happened to a Saba grad I know as well. Ended up in Tennesee.
