Transfer from MUA

Hello,
I am unhappy with the clinical coordinator over here at MUA. I am thinking of tranferring. Can anyone tell me how Spartan stacks up and what is involved in a transfer? I have already finished my basic sciences, but need to take step one.

Thanks

Are you nutso....stay at MUA or take step 1 and transfer to Ross/Auc for clinicals. Heck go to AUA first...bad move brother. No offense intended to Spartan people, but at least seek out a school that has external recognition.

I second that comment. Spartan has a not so good reputation b/c of the bad publicity it gets from prior graduates who indulge in not too good medical practice. STAY PUT.

Have you some links about that? I know that one patient is dead while or after a spartan student tried to intubate him, but I never heard about other bad medical practices.

Transfer from MUA/Spartan in the News

I'm a graduate of Spartan and agree with everything in the report. However you must weigh it against such schools like Ross. Ross takes in 300 plus students and does not have enough US sites so they flunk out most at the end of the second year. Yet they make their students pay for a kaplan prep course as part of tuition, to improve their USMLE scores. They also have big money and are able to buy clinical spots in the US.

Spartan on the other hand is a small school that has continued to put out physicians despite the bad publicity. To be honest, spartan was started for nontraditional professional students. A majority of my classmates had phds and other post graduate training. As a result the majority of my class past all steps and are currently in residency or have completed and practicing.

Most of those who go to spartan because of it's lax entrance requirement end up repeating one trimester several times and eventually flunk out or give up. If they do make out of the island, they do not pass step 1. So there are checks and balances to make sure they do not get through.

So if you are one of those slackers, you won't make it at spartan even with it's entrance requirements, professors that read from the text or 16 to one cadaver.

View website for Alumni info. And by the way we heard a lot of this stuff which scared us into studying even harder. Now my buddy and I look back and laugh, because they said we wouldn't pass our steps, get rotations, get into residency or get our licenses. We did.

coolaid get a life

For your info I do not work for Spartan. I was at Spartan when one of those teams visited and we discussed the very issues outlined in the report. We also requested that the school re-apply to California but they refused to pay the $50,000-$100,000 needed for a site visit. We also had a visit by the Medical School in Puerto Rico that was responsible for securing our cadavers.

I repeat all of my colleagues including myself had post-bac degrees. We had a few pharmacists, microbiologists, biochemists, nurses, physician assistants, public health professionals as well as professors that taught at Howard University and University of Kansas. For those who were there at the time will remember that we had an individual that had an engineering degree and a degree in physics.

As regards the unfortunate event with the Anesthesologist that had attended Spartan, how come there was no mention of where he did residency training? By the way most US physicians will tell you that a student doing clinicals knows more basic science facts than a practicing physician. Yet if you ever had an opportunity to do an anesthesia rotation they will tell you that that has happened to the best of them. It's called plucking the goose and that is why they invented the co2 monitor.

So waste your time worrying about Spartan instead of passing your boards and eventually going through the hurdles of being licensed.
