comment on the article
I read that article and am shocked. I personally think that article was out to just trash Spartan, b/c there are many many med students and doctors from many schools who make mistakes, even worse than those in the article mentioned. But the point is residency is where you learn your medicine and treatment of patients PERIOD!!!!! I am just finishing my rotations, and I have passed my step 1, and step 2, but I will tell you that after spartan, I knew some but not much basic science, and ALmost NOOO clinical science. But ALL my clinical skills were learned in hospitals in the US by US trained doctors, as well as others... and that is what makes the biggest impact on your clinical training day to day work.
Even more is what you learn in your residency, that is what you take with you day to day and the rest of your life, trust me when you do a PE and history, and order tests and Diagnose, and treat, you Learn ALLL of that in your residency, and your clinical years, Not your basice Sciences!! My wife is a resident from a US med school, and she and I discuss this alot, and she agrees too. SO basically I do agree that spartan is underfunded, and needs much improvement, but I know personally alot of graduates who are residents now, and it gives you a great opportunity, and that article is definitely out to do damage to Spartan specifically, but I dont know the history of the article and cant comment on those people mentioned. Obviously there are alot of competent and well practiced doctors who the articles fail to mention. Anyway I have just discovered this spartan forum and hope to check back sometime, good luck to all you future spartan docs!! Dont let the Bad ones, there are plenty, ruin it for you,... peace |

Not all negative...
I have always said that my intent is to be honest about the state of affairs at Spartan. There are some obvious positives to the school: the affordability, the fact that they give anyone the opportunity to become a doctor if they have the dedication and drive, and the access to sites in the US for clinicals. I have never said that Spartan is ALL bad; what frustrates me is that it could be so much better if the administration would be willing to make a few changes. This would attract more students, more serious students in fact, and do Spartan some good. I had some good experiences at Spartan, but I do find that I am deficient in knowledge when compared to my colleagues at times.
It is within Spartan's power to improve itself; maybe they will take this article as constructive criticism and make the needed changes to bring it to the level of its potential. It is unfortunate the Spartan seems to be targeted as opposed to other schools that are comparable. |
