I did a Psych rotation at NBH. Though there are several issues that need to be addressed, I think it a really good experience. Depending on which doctor and where you on the campus you are placed, you will either tend to acute patients or ones that have been there from anywhere from 14-21 years.
My preceptor asked us for our syllabus and with the director was able to design a series of lectures (too bad it was only into our third week that we started having lectures). I really don't think it was a big problem given the fact that there is some lack of communication between SMU and the hospital but as long as there is a steady stream of students, the lectures will be carried out. Right now there are only two medical students sent from St. Matthews University and another will be arriving shortly.
Either than that, we did a lot of hands-on and observational learning. If this is you first rotation, it might be a bit tough because its hard enough to talk to patients already and if you don't have the skills, it might be a bit tougher to talk to one's with mental illnesses ranging from schizophrenia to those with psychotic illnesses induced by substance dependency. You don't get to see many of the "worry-wells" you would see in private hospital and a lot of the patients here have become part of the system. So in a way, if you are here long enough you will see them get rehospitalized.
Depending on your preceptor also, you would be there from 8 till 4:30. The preceptor I had comes in at 6 am, therefore its advisable to come in early because there's a lot of learning starting very early. Be prepared to write progress notes, comprehensive psychiatric examination (similar to H and P), do case presentations, patients interviews, etc. If you end up on Mckee 2, you will end up all sitting with the other two doctors in the team meetings- so essentially, you will end up getting to know all the patients. The preceptor I had taught at the Univ of Minnesota Medical School and Case. You will see that a lot of the Doctors love teaching so all you have to do is ask.
Overall, you will be working with a lot of doctors and preceptors encourage that if you get a chance to go see forensic psych you should or if you want, you could visit other units. If you are truly interested and waiting for assignment to another rotation (we know how readily available those are), you can also opt into doing Child psych elective in toledo. NBH wont arrange that with you but you can get all details from the Clinical Director.
All in all, I think it was a good experience. Ohio was definitely not on my list of states I wanted to go to but its a great educational experience. The area is nice and safe. Also, a CAR IS A MUST!! There is no bus service and being a mental facility, it isn't exactly in the center of town. The closest place to live is around 4 miles away but it doesn't have internet. You can opt out to live in Independence, Ohio (Days Inn) which is 9 miles away. It's tough to be in one room all day but its only 6 weeks. Any questions, email me.

If you are only staying for psych and then leaving ohio it only makes sense to stay in a hotel for the 6 weeks. There are hotels in Independance Ohio which is about 10 minutes away from the psych ward.

Google search it or Craigslist it. This is how you make it through clinicals.

Most students find sublets, rooms for rent, hotel rooms, or attempt a short term lease.

In general uftim is right, 6 weeks is a little short to do anything other than a hotel though. I would google hotels in independence and call and find out. I know several people who stayed in a hotel there. It was decent and convenient only 10 minutes away. Northfield is kinda dead and the area near the psych ward is basically the woods...so unless u wanna camp out with the deer and the psychos i'd try independance or a neighboring town.

I'd say that a hotel is rarely worth the cost. I did only 6 weeks in VA. Researching the extended-stay hotels, it would have cost $3500-$4500 for the 6 week rotation. I found a really nice furnished apartment in a super nice area with internet, cable, and all bills paid for $2000 total. It was a little scary, though, because I was sitting in a diner the day before the rotation looking in the paper for an apartment.

If you do the leg work, you can save some serious cash.
