A Brief History of Romania by The World Factbook 2006
The principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia - for centuries under the suzerainty of the Turkish Ottoman Empire - secured their autonomy in 1856; they united in 1859 and a few years later adopted the new name of Romania. The country gained recognition of its independence in 1878. It joined the Allied Powers in World War I and acquired new territories following the conflict. In 1940, it allied with the Axis powers and participated in the 1941 German invasion of the USSR. Three years later, overrun by the Soviets, Romania signed an armistice. The Faculty has been constantly concerned with developing high quality medical training that should meet the national, as well as international standards of competitiveness (in accordance with the European Union’s requirements) so that the degrees should be acknowledged all over Europe. During the academic year 2003-2004, 775 students were trained here by 124 full-time teaching staff, all excellent professionals. The faculty has the right to organize doctoral studies, postgraduate programmes and M.A. courses. The clinical equipment of the faculty consists of 3,000 beds and a modern, 5,000 square meter building, for courses in the pre-clinical subjects. The computer laboratory has a network of 20 computers, all having optical fibre Internet connection, thus allowing free access to information for students and teaching staff. Medical students benefit from the excellent accommodations offered by the university campus. Depending on their grades, students may benefit from scholarships granted by the Ministry of Education and Research, as well as scholarships abroad due to the relationships developed by the faculty with similar institutions in France, Germany and England. University of Sibiu School of Medicine"Victor Papilian" Faculty of Medicine carries out in both content and form the exceptional medical tradition that ranks Sibiu with the most important medical centres. In spite of being a “young” institution, we have successfully integrated into the University of Sibiu, which permanently consolidates its name in the country and abroad. We have built a “strong” faculty and organised a competitive teaching process, integrated in the European requirements by numerous ties with peer faculties from abroad. Done to its specialization fields the European – oriented curricula, a well prepared, remarkable teaching staff, the „Victor Papilian” Faculty of Medicine has become of great interest for the high-school graduates who want to become dedicated doctors. Nowadays medicine does not imply only human quality and exceptional scientific knowledge, but the necessary technical supplies, too. Benefiting of a new building with well equipped laboratories and a clinic hospital with performed medical equipment, a responsible medical staff, Sibiu can be ranked as a competitive medical academic centre, able to give out distinguished doctors by a man-to-man instructive process.
