So, as far as I have been able to figure out, this is a list of what to bring for first termers:
Backpack (Duh) Binders (3-4 inch) or a single hole punch and sturdy Binder rings Hi-liters (3-4) if you hi-lite in books Colored Pencils/ Pens Pencils, Pens, Mechanical pencils (erasers and lead) Calculator (small inexpensive one for conversions) 2-3 pairs Scrubs (which you can get at Walmart or a scrub outlet) Lap top AND AN ADAPTER IF FROM THE STATES! apparently printers are not needed until later term- the ones in the library are good. Befriending a cute 3rd termer or higher who can tell you about all the secret printers. Umbrella. SERIOUSLY Ibuprofen, tylenol, Nyquil, Benadryl, Vitamins, Band-aids, ace bandages, first aid stuff Sheets and linens for NORMAL Twin Size bed (2-3 pillows, light blankets, 2 sets sheets) Bath mats and as from what I gather a curtain too? (talk to the roomie) Flashlight Power-strip with adapter Nail Clippers/ Tweezers Extras of Razors, Shampoo, Lotion, Conditioner, Other toiletries (make up and nail polish remover) Larger water bottle (Pink) to refill on campus because they have filtered water DUCT TAPE Some Kitchen Items: knife, fork, spoon, small frying pan, small pot, plate, cup, shotglass, bowl, and storage Bags Playing Cards (clear alcohol proof ones at Target) Post-its Paper Notebooks Rags for cleaning, drying dishes, and Bug squashing Can opener Memory Stick Leatherman (the most useful thing ever!) Batteries Face Sunscreen Special Sunscreen from REI that kills bugs AND is a sunscreen Any Special Medications needed (BCP) Battery Powered Clock (if from the states) Camera and all components (who wouldn't want to have this?) Running shoes Mosquito netting or Small Fan for your bed (the fan sucks em in and kills them) Snacks you can't live without (Gum, 3 musketeers, peanut butter, protein bars, all that random stuff you don't want to waste money on) Feminine Products (they are cheaper in the states) Kleenex Long extension Cord with adapter for the ladies that use straightners and blow dryers Box of Gloves (nitril if you can't stand latex) for labs Condoms... I know you all are not planning on having any fun but seriously. From what I hear, bring the brand you like (and lube). A jacket/tie or a sundress/light dress for the White Coat Ceremony 200-300 dollars US to pay fees at the airport and tip the porter Hopefully this helps those who are just as lost as I. If you have more to add PLEASE DO! I have yet to even be there (I start Aug. 07'), but I figured I might send out my own research. Remember to be smart about what you pack in your carry on. Make sure you have your lap-top front and center with your reciept AND KEEP THE RECIEPT THEY GIVE YOU! Smile and if you can flirt to make sure they charge the minimal fee. Keep your other smaller electronics in pockets... buried within luggage and maybe don't mention them.... make sure you have reciepts though, just in case. PS. Anyone bringing or buying a blender is my new best friend! |

Awesome list triestan! Thanks alot.
I have been down here awhile (nearly done!) and it is hard for me to remember some specifics of when I was freaking out and about to come down. I have some recommendations about some of the stuff however: -Plug adapters for any electronics shouldn't be necessary if you're living in the dorms. I never lived in the dorms b/c of pets, but I believe they all have 110 volt outlets. I must admit, however, I have used them on campus when study area outlets are at a premium. Off campus all/most outlets will be 220 and you will need a transformer. -Umbrella...I never considered myself an umbrella type person. A good raincoat or poncho may due. Make sure if you're taking your laptop everywhere to have something which covers your backpack. Overall, rainstorms are almost always quite short and cover can be sought if you're without either. -Memory stick: My understanding was that a 2gb stick was issued 1st term to all students. Maybe check into this first before buying a new one. -Box of gloves: If tight for space (always tight for space) gloves can be purchased on campus for $50 EC/box 100 nitrile. 1 box got me well through 1st term but I am not too wasteful with them. -Condoms: Very available on the island including campus "D'store". If you really have a brand preference though...bring 'em. Customs & Immigration: Have all paperwork the school sent you and passport and other paperwork and you'll "breeze" through immigration. Then get luggage (hopefully!...plane will be ultra full w/ students and some luggage always gets left behind to arrive 1 day - 1 week or so later). Get laptop and preferably have original purchase receipt in-hand. They will expect every single person to have one because they always do. Like you said...be polite...show receipt...pay duty...and usually nothing else is searched. A little covertness is ok. Ipods and external hd's or whatever can be concealed easily but I believe anything under $300 USD shouldn't be charged unless you plan on selling Ipods in Grenada to pay your way through school. If SGU sends out the stuff they did when I was in your situation...you should also have a stethoscope, digital thermometer, dissection kit with at least several forceps, scalpel handle (and maybe a box of blades aren't a bad idea), scissors, surgical gown and cap. Dog nail trimmers are nice to have when you start working at the hospital more, as is a penlight. I will post here if I think of more. |

Now that I am here...
Few things now that I am here and settled in...
Food is kind of a big deal. If you get in late to campus, there is no orientation food waiting for you, so go to the student center and d' store (upstairs). Certian foods are expensive: Peanut Butter! Beef jerky! Candy! Any specialty drinks! VODKA! Bring em with ya if you can. Don't forget your gloves for anatomy lab. I use 4 binders for all my classes- you'll want binders. Make sure they are BIG (2inch plus). One girl brought a 3 ring hole punch = smartie and gets bugged a lot BRING OFF bug repellent! TRUST ME! You will have to bring a bath mat if you want one, and maybe a small rug.... the floors are all tile everywhere. A THICK BLANKET! I thought they were kidding, IT GETS COLD IN THE ROOMS. I can't stress this enough as my roommate is feeling it and blankets are expensive (ish). A good dish towel You'll need any cooking stuff you use religiously- things are a bit more expensive on the island. Any medications you might need and klennex! there is mold in some of the rooms! and be prepared for the ac to be on the fritz. BRING A PLANNER! Sticky hooks that come off easily Muck boots for the farm. There is a small space on the side of the closet to hang things. it is not a 3rd world country, but it is a 2nd world country, remember this. It is the best experience if you realize you have to live without certian things. Milk is here but it is hit or miss if it is good, red meat can be iffy too... just cook it well. When you get to campus in Jan. get a cell phone! They are maybe 20 bucks, and they have the best promotional deals at this time so load up on the minutes. It is pretty much buy 70 minutes and they double it... you can keep coming back and buying them, they can only add 70 at one time but can add them multiple times. This is the cheapest it will be for the term so get as many minutes as you think you'll need. Go to all the orientation events! If you need a map then ask someone! You can feel your way around, but just get a map. Things are very disorganized when you first get here, but you will find out when and where your classes are. Go to footsteps buddy orientation. The pothounds around campus can be nice, but be cautious. An animal that may look neglected may not be, so try to find out before you start snagging dogs off the streets! Be cautious when petting cats- they carry zoonotic diseases. HAVE FUN! BUT BE SAFE! It has been a whirlwind of a time, but you'll be ok. Heck! I am still alive! (that is saying something) |

Ethernet cord
Before I forget...
BRING AN ETHERNET CORD. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU HAVE A WIRELSS COMPUTER. YOU WON'T GET WIRELESS IN YOUR ROOM! They will sell the cords, but they run out quickly so bring a cord. You get wireless everywhere else though... |

All good things listed...
I'll just add a CHEAP way to call back home to the states (cali for me)... SKYPE. Skype is soooooo easy to use and for skype to skype calls on your computer it is FREE with WebCam capabilities included. And for calling cell phones and land lines back home, SKYPE is also dirt cheap at 2 CENTS a minute. When you're entrenched in vet school, you won't really be worried about calling everyone back home too regularly and thus SKYPE will be a great communication tool. I have plenty more little tidbits of info and I'll be popping in here from time to time... |
